Just Back From… Norway & Svalbard with Hurtigruten

This edition sees Mike Waldon-Smith discuss his recent experience sailing with Hurtigruten, along the Norwegian coast via the North Cape and then up to Svalbard.

Where?

We had joined the 15 Day Svalbard Line, one of Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyages which starts and finishes in Bergen, sailing up the Norwegian coastline towards Svalbard via The North Cape; the most northerly point on mainland Europe.

Svalbard consists of three seasons that define its yearly cycle, Sunny Winter from March to May; the perfect time to experience ice caves and go on ski expeditions, Polar Summer from May to September; the season of the midnight sun, and the Northern Lights Winter from October to February; a season dominated by 24 hours of darkness.

Why go with Hurtigruten?

The Signature Voyages are all inclusive so you can enjoy fantastic top-quality Nordic cuisine whilst sampling a wide range of Norwegian juices, beers, spirits, and international wines.

The main lounge is in the 1893 bar and on Deck 9 above, there are several small lounge areas, a library and information area. There is a small conference room and a lecture hall where they give daily talks/lectures, such as Norwegian Explorers, Norwegian Wildlife and what to expect at the next port of call. There is also a gym plus his and her saunas with full glass windows overlooking the sea, very relaxing.

Highlight?

The destination is the highlight! Offering spectacular scenic views along the Norwegian coastline as you cruise through fjords surrounded by glaciers, mountains and small icebergs. We also experienced an amazing sunset over the North Cape, as well as a repeated performance of the northern lights, which were like a night time rainbow, continually changing colours, spectacular!

Another highlight was Longyearbyen, the Capital of Svalbard and where we had our husky experience. We did the husky dogsledding on wheels, where you interacted with the huskies, helped harness the dogs up and I was also able to drive one of the sledges.

Top tip?

On our penultimate day we took a tour of the ship, visiting the bridge where the captain gave a talk, and seeing the various cabins/suites. The Inside, Outside and Arctic Superior Cabins are perfect but if you want more luxury, space and benefits then the Suites are ideal.
