St Pancras Station is one of London’s great architectural triumphs, blending Victorian grandeur with modern European connectivity. Opened in 1868 for the Midland Railway, it showcased bold engineering through William Henry Barlow’s vast iron‑and‑glass train shed, then the largest single-span roof in the world. Its striking Gothic Revival frontage, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, later became the iconic Midland Grand Hotel.
After falling into decline in the 20th century, the station was spectacularly restored and reopened in 2007 as St Pancras International, transforming it into the UK’s gateway to Europe via the high-speed Eurostar service to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. As of the time of writing, Eurostar services connect London directly with Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, offering fast, city centre to city centre travel that has redefined cross Channel mobility.
Sirkeci Station invites travellers into the romantic world of the Orient Express, where Europe once met the magic of Istanbul. Opened in 1890 and designed by German architect August Jasmund, its elegant blend of European and Ottoman styles (glowing stained glass, carved motifs, and Art Nouveau details) creates an unforgettable first impression. As the eastern terminus of the legendary Paris to Istanbul Orient Express, it became a symbol of luxury and adventure from 1883 to 1977, welcoming diplomats, writers, and explorers into the city’s historic heart beside the Golden Horn.
Today, restored halls and the Railway Museum preserve its golden age charm, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and experience one of Istanbul’s most atmospheric landmarks. Although nowadays the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express stops short of the station at Halkali, with a scope of possibly returning to Sirkeci, when in Istanbul do stop by to admire the grandeur of decades past.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai’s UNESCO listed masterpiece, rises in a breathtaking fusion of Victorian Gothic Revival and traditional Indian architecture, created by British architect F. W. Stevens between 1878 and 1888. Its grand dome, turrets, stained glass and sculptural details make it one of India’s most iconic landmarks; a true ‘Bombay Gothic’ treasure where East meets West in spectacular form.
Today, this historic terminus forms an unforgettable starting point for travellers boarding the Maharaja Express, India’s most luxurious train. While only certain departures and itineraries use CSMT, its journeys evoke the same royal splendour: offering opulent cabins, curated excursions and a window into India’s rich heritage, all echoing the grandeur embodied by Mumbai’s legendary station.

Today, it remains a vibrant hub on the Northeast Corridor, connecting visitors to the high speed Acela Express and the widely used Northeast Regional trains, linking New York with Boston, Washington, Philadelphia and beyond.
The station is frequently used for high-stakes scenes, dramatic reunions, or to establish a classic NYC setting. Key mentions in popular culture include The Avengers, Gossip Girl and Armageddon to name a few. Whether you're glancing up at the shimmering zodiac ceiling or boarding a sleek intercity train, Grand Central promises a quintessential New York travel experience.
Denver Union Station, first opened in 1881, has long stood as the city’s historic gateway to the American West. After decades of decline, it underwent a major restoration that transformed its Beaux Arts Great Hall and revitalised the surrounding neighbourhood into a vibrant cultural hub, while also preserving the landmark’s original architectural charm. Today, this beautiful station serves as the departure point for the Canyon Spirit train, offering travellers a seamless blend of history and adventure as they begin their rail journey into the American Southwest.
From this iconic station in the Mile High City, the Canyon Spirit embarks on a spectacular daytime-only route through Colorado’s canyons, river valleys and mountain passes, reaching Moab and Salt Lake City. As the train pulls away from Union Station’s historic façade, travellers are carried from Denver’s vibrant urban energy into some of the most breathtaking landscapes in North America.
Kanazawa Station is one of Japan’s most striking gateways, celebrated for its fusion of tradition and innovation. First opened in 1898 and completely redesigned in 2005, the station greets visitors with the magnificent Tsuzumi mon Gate, shaped like a traditional hand drum, and the sweeping glass Motenashi Dome, symbolizing the city’s deep spirit of hospitality. Inside, modern concourses blend seamlessly with touches of local culture, reflecting Kanazawa’s artistic heritage.
Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension, travellers can reach Kanazawa from Tokyo in just 2.5 hours, making it easier than ever to explore this historic city’s gardens, markets, and museums. Amsterdam Centraal, opened in 1889 and designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, is a monumental blend of Gothic and Renaissance Revival architecture that has become one of the Netherlands’ busiest and most important railway hubs. Its grand red‑brick façade, cast‑iron roof spans, and richly decorated halls make it a destination in its own right, while recent renovations have seen modernisation without compromising its historic charm.
Today it connects Amsterdam to cities across Europe via operators such as NS International, Eurostar, European Sleeper, and ÖBB Nightjet, including direct overnight services reaching all the way to Vienna; a comfortable way to travel from the canals of Amsterdam to the heart of Austria. For travellers arriving via Eurostar from London, Amsterdam Centraal represents the first greeting card for a weekend sojourn visiting the ‘Venice of the North’.
São Bento Station, inaugurated in 1916, is one of Porto’s most beautiful landmarks, built on the site of the former Benedictine Convent of São Bento da Avé‑Maria and designed by architect José Marques da Silva in a graceful Beaux‑Arts style. Its grand entrance hall features around 20,000 azulejo tiles painted by Jorge Colaço, depicting Portuguese history and everyday life in breathtaking detail, making the station feel like a free public museum in the heart of the city.
Though São Bento serves regional and urban trains (the high‑speed Alfa Pendular does not depart from here); it remains an essential, inspiring stop for any visitor to Porto.
Taormina Giardini, often praised as ‘the most elegant station in the world’, is a Belle Époque treasure that immerses travellers in the romance of historic rail travel. Rebuilt in the 1920s by architect Roberto Narducci, its neo Gothic façade, crenelated towers and Art Nouveau details create an enchanting arrival overlooking the Bay of Naxos. Inside, Sicilian style woodwork, frescoes and stained glass by Salvatore Gregorietti evoke the golden age of the Grand Tour.
Celebrated for its cultural and architectural value, this cinematic station, featured in films like The Godfather Part III is also graced by the iconic La Dolce Vita Orient Express.
