The big moment has come and it’s time for you to start planning your trip of a lifetime! From iconic cities to crystal waters, from towering mountains to quaint villages, Europe has a huge amount to offer. But with so much choice it can be overwhelming to know where to begin, so I’m hoping to offer a little inspiration as to how to spend three months around Europe!
Hop on the Eurostar to Paris – a city filled with iconic landmarks, an abundance of culture and pretty lanes to explore.
From Paris make use of the well-connected train systems of these countries to journey southward exploring some of Europe’s most famous cities.
1. Geneva: a direct train from Paris and a great base to explore the glorious lake region!
2. Milan: a hub of culture and fashion! Don’t miss the chance to see Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’
3. Venice: time to experience what you’ve just seen photos of! This famous city on water is a must on any Europe itinerary!
4. Florence: the heart of the renaissance. Get immersed in this cultural haven!
5. Rome: both a foodie and history lover’s delight! Tip: when visiting the Colosseum don’t miss a trip up Palatine Hill for incredible views over Rome!
6. Naples: when exploring this enchanting city, make sure to take a trip to Mt Vesuvius, Pompeii and perhaps the lesser-known Herculaneum archaeological site!
Having finished in Naples you are perfectly located to hop down to the sunny Amalfi Coast where villages perched on cliffsides with glistening turquoise waters and pretty pebble beaches await! You could easily spend longer along this coast but if you’re keeping to my tight schedule then it’s off to Greece! The quickest way is to get a flight straight there, however, you could opt to use the opportunity to drive around the beautiful Puglia region (Italy’s heel) before then taking a ferry to the Greek coast instead!
Top tip: be armed with a Eurorail pass and a backpack; you’ll be glad to not have a suitcase once you realise just how any stairs you will encounter!
The next four weeks are going to be filled with sun, beach, culture and parties as you hop your way around the beautiful islands of southern Europe. Before you start the island hopping you will have time to explore the iconic historical city of Athens. Hear about fascinating Greek myths as you discover the legendary Acropolis and Parthenon, savour delicious authentic Greek food, and wander along the quaint lanes of the city.
There are so many different islands to explore and ways to do it, but here is a route that is particularly well connected and hits some of the most popular islands:
1. Mykonos: take a ferry from Athens to the popular island of Mykonos for picturesque beaches, glistening waters and jaw-dropping sunsets!
2. Paros: discover this unspoilt gem with beautiful hidden coves and traditional villages.
3. Santorini: renowned for its dramatic blue domes and outstanding beauty. Perhaps extend your stay for a bit for some well-deserved rest!
Group touring is a fun and social way to meet other like-minded travellers, however, if you’re keen to save some money then local ferries are an equally easy way to get around. Check out our self-guided Greek island hopping itinerary, or take a look at this island hopper group tour!
Following Greece, you’ll head back up north by coach and then take ferries along the coast to explore popular spots and hidden gems too!
1. Tirana: an up-and-coming hotspot, the capital of Albania is not to be missed. Markets, museums and squares aplenty as well as fantastic prices!
2. Budva: another hidden gem that is slowly gaining attention. Get ahead of the crowds and visit Montenegro’s charming coastal city in its unspoilt beauty!
3. Dubrovnik: just a quick ferry from Budva and you’re in Croatia! A UNESCO World Heritage Site and only rising in fame due its appearance in Game of Thrones, this city is not to be missed.
4. Korcula & Hvar: make a couple of island stops along the Dalmatian Coast and explore their stunning natural beauty.
5. Split: finish your island hopping in Split, a beautiful coastal city, known for its winding streets and impressive Roman Diocletian Palace.
The island hopping has come to an end as you move away from the coast. For the next week experience the national parks of Croatia, Slovenia and Austria by car!
1. Plitvice Lakes National Park: this is a must see on any Croatian itinerary - I was blown away by the beauty of this park!
2. Ljubljana (pronounced loo-bee-aa-nuh): an underrated gem, this quaint and characterful city is worth a quick visit. Hopefully by the time you’re back you will be able to pronounce and even spell it!
3. Austria’s Alps: there’s just too many stunning alpine villages to choose from. However, I loved Zell am See and Salzburg. A particular highlight was the hike up Schafberg Mountain and the scenic train back down!
4. Vienna: from here you’re back to high-speed rail, city and culture! Make sure to explore the many stunning art galleries that have free entrance!
5. Budapest: lined with culture and fascinating architecture, you’ll be spoilt for things to do and see! Tip: after a day on your feet why not enjoy their famous thermal baths?
6. Prague: navigate cobblestone streets as you explore unique architecture and fairy-tale castles!
7. Berlin: full of history and culture as well as an infamous nightlife!
8. Copenhagen: this vibrant and picturesque city is also the gateway to the Nordics.
Tip: make use of day trips so you don’t move too often! Some absolute must-dos are Lake Bled (from Ljubljana), and Hallstatt and Wolfgang (from Salzburg).
Once again, Scandinavia can be explored in a variety of ways; however, the easiest way to access all the national parks would be either car hire or group touring.
Southern and western Norway is the easiest area to navigate and is where you can marvel at huge peaks, deep fjords and charming fishing villages. For any adrenaline seekers out there, make sure to visit Voss, Norway’s adventure capital! Embark on this 12 day Scandinavia group tour, or if you’re interested in driving yourself then check out one of our Norwegian Fjords & The Atlantic Ocean Road itinerary!
Finally, we’re coming to an end of a thrilling three months. You could either opt to fly straight back home, or perhaps take a little bit longer on your journey to make your way back by train via Amsterdam and see the famous city of canals as a wonderful finish!
I hope you’ve gained plenty of inspiration and are now brimming with ideas and excitement about your upcoming trip. Good luck with the planning!
