Koh Samui is situated in the Gulf of Thailand, and that changes everything.
While much of Thailand gets heavy rain from June to October, Koh Samui’s wettest period is later in the year, mainly October to December.
Koh Samui has three main seasons: the dry and sunny season from January to April, the hot season from April to August, and the rainy (monsoon) season from October to December.
September tends to sit between seasons. Unpredictable, but often still workable.
January to March is the sweet spot.
If you want postcard weather, calm seas, and beach days that don’t get intercepted by rain, then this is the best time to visit Koh Samui.
These months offer consistently sunny days, low humidity compared to other months, calm sea conditions (so great for swimming and snorkelling), and comfortable evenings.
If it’s your first time visiting Koh Samui, then these months are the best!
Dry season (January to April)
This is Koh Samui at its most reliable. Visiting during this time you can expect blue skies and minimal rainfall, excellent beach and boat trip conditions, and it’s the perfect time for island hopping to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
April can feel a little intense heat-wise, but it’s also lively thanks to Songkran (Thai new year)!
Hot season (May to August)
This season surprises a lot of people, in a good way. There’s still plenty of sunshine, rainfall is normally short and sporadic, sea temperatures are perfect for swimming, and there’s fewer crowds than in the winter months.
Temperatures often climb above 32°C and humidity is higher, but the trade-off is a quieter island. If you don’t mind the heat and plan on doing more beach time than sightseeing, then June and July can be an excellent time to visit Koh Samui.
Rainy season (October to December)
This is the one period in Koh Samui where timing really matters. This season sees the heaviest rainfall, roughest seas, and occasional flooding in some areas.
That said, it’s not usually constant rain every day; but if your trip revolves around beaches, snorkelling or day tours, this is the riskiest time to visit Koh Samui.
• Pack lightweight, breathable clothing year-round.
• Bring reef-safe suncream – the sun is strong, even on cloudy days.
• Always check sea conditions before booking boat tours.
• Rent scooters only if you’re confident; rain makes roads slippery.
• Book beachfront resorts early for stays during peak season.
