Santorini is one of those places that feels like it’s been conjured from a dream: dazzling whitewashed houses clinging to cliffs, blue-domed churches, legendary sunsets, and the endless expanse of the Aegean Sea. But when is the best time to visit Santorini?

The answer depends on what you’re looking for: sunny beach days, quieter streets, better prices, or lively nightlife. Read on for my guide to the best time to visit Santorini, to help you make the most of your time on this iconic Greek island.

Peak Season (June to August)

Weather: Hot and dry with temperatures averaging between 28°C and 35°C

Sea: Perfect for swimming

Crowds: Very busy

Prices: Highest of the year

Pros:

• Guaranteed sunshine

• All restaurants, bars, clubs and shops are open

• Lively nightlife, festivals and beach parties

Cons:

• Lots of tourists, especially at Oia at sunset

• Hotel and flight prices are at their peak

If you want a quintessential Greek island experience and don’t mind the crowds, the peak season is the best time to visit Santorini. It’s the ideal time to visit for honeymooners, sun-seekers and party lovers.

Shoulder Seasons (April to May and September to October)

Pleasant and warm, with temperatures generally ranging between 20°C and 27°C

Seas: Swimmable (warmer in autumn)

Crowds: Much smaller than in the summer

Prices: Lower than in the peak season

Pros:

• Mild, comfortable temperatures for sightseeing

• Stunning sunsets with fewer people

• Hotels and tours often offer better deals

• Vineyards are particularly beautiful in autumn for the September harvest

Cons:

• Some smaller businesses may have reduced hours in April or October

These times of year are the best time to visit Santorini for those who want great weather without the summer chaos. Photographers, couples and families often prefer these months.

Cons:

• Many hotels, restaurants and attractions close for the season

Not ideal for beach lovers

This is the best time to visit Santorini for adventurous travellers looking to see more of the island. It’s also the ideal time for budget travellers and for those who aren’t bothered about beach weather.

Tips for planning your trip to Santorini

• Book accommodation and ferries early for summer visits

• Sunset in Oia gets extremely crowded – try Imerovigli or Fira for a more relaxed experience

• Rent a car or a quad bike to explore the lesser-known parts of the island

• Taste the local wines (especially Assyrtiko) at a volcanic winery

• Pack layers in shoulder and low season – it can get chilly at night
