Family Friendly USA Holiday Destinations

Growing up in the United States gave me the chance to experience first-hand the incredible variety of family holiday opportunities the country has to offer. Whether it’s exploring the breathtaking landscapes of national parks, soaking up the sun on endless stretches of golden sand, or discovering vibrant cities filled with family friendly attractions, the USA truly has something for every family.

With its rich mix of experiences and stunning scenery, a family holiday in the United States is the perfect way to share an adventure together.

Read on for a few of my favourite family destinations in the USA for a memorable getaway.

California

This might seem like an obvious choice, but California really does have it all when it comes to family holidays. Long sandy beaches perfect for lazy afternoons, theme parks to entertain kids of all ages, cities packed with iconic sights, and national parks showcasing breathtaking natural beauty.

Stay in a rustic cabin in Yosemite National Park, watch adorable sea otters float among kelp forests in Monterey, collect sand dollars along Pismo Beach, ride San Francisco’s historic trams or cycle between Santa Monica and Venice Beach at sunset - you will find endless options for family fun in California.

I was lucky enough to spend a large portion of my childhood in California, and some of my fondest family memories were made on road trips across the state. A California fly drive holiday is a great way to explore, allowing you to tick off multiple stops in a single trip with ease.

Florida

Florida’s theme parks are a huge draw for families, with options for all ages. From the magic of Walt Disney World Resort to the thrills of Universal Orlando Resort and splash-filled water parks, Orlando offers a never-ending array of excitement for everyone. But there’s so much more to the Sunshine State. With stunning stretches of coastline, unforgettable wildlife encounters, and a vibrant energy, family holidays to Florida promise exceptional experiences beyond the theme parks.

Go behind the scenes of NASA at the Kennedy Space Centre, swim in the warm, azure waters of the Gulf Coast, look out for alligators in the Everglades, stroll among stylish street art in Miami’s Wynwood District and snorkel colourful coral reefs in the Keys - there is so much to see and do on a family holiday to Florida.

As a pre-teen, I loved our family holiday to Florida, visiting Orlando, Naples, Miami and the Keys. Key West was my favourite and most memorable stop, thanks to its laidback atmosphere, exceptional sunsets and my first taste of Key lime pie - still my favourite dessert to this day. Multi centre holidays are a great way to experience Florida, they allow you to combine action-packed theme parks with vibrant cities or areas of immense natural beauty.

Arizona

Family holidays in Arizona offer year-round sunshine, a taste of the Wild West, and a glimpse into Native American history. With cattle ranches, towering cacti and some of the USA’s most awe-inspiring scenery, Arizona promises adventure, natural beauty, and unforgettable experiences.

Mountain bike along Sedona’s red rock trails, stargaze beneath clear desert skies, stand in awe at the seemingly endless sweep of the Grand Canyon and the iconic spires of Monument Valley, then don a Stetson and enjoy classic family fun at one of the state’s family friendly guest ranches - an experience of a lifetime.

One of my earliest family memories was visiting the Grand Canyon - a destination impossible to forget. If you have time, extend your trip into Nevada to experience the bright lights of Las Vegas. For huge savings on hotel rates and a more relaxed, family friendly atmosphere, visit midweek. With dancing fountains, elaborately themed hotels, and a host of activities for the whole family to enjoy, Las Vegas is a fun addition to any USA family holiday.

New York

Offering one of the world’s most iconic skylines, New York City never fails to impress. From famous landmarks and wonderful green spaces to endless family friendly entertainment and incredible food, it’s a city sure to wow your kids, whatever their age.

Cycle around Central Park, catch a Broadway show, explore world-renowned museums, ride the subway, head up to one of the city’s dizzying observation decks, or walk across the Brooklyn Bridge in search of the best slice of pizza - and after all that, there will still be so much left to see and do.

I remember my first trip to New York as an early teen feeling like stepping straight onto a movie set, with yellow cabs whizzing past and the bright lights of Times Square instantly familiar. New York works perfectly as a standalone destination, but it also lends itself well to extending your trip. With flights across the country - or even to the Caribbean - it’s easy to balance a few days of sightseeing with some family downtime. Alternatively, hop on an Amtrak train to explore another of the USA’s captivating cities.

Hawaii

Family holidays in Hawaii combine breathtaking tropical scenery, rich cultural traditions, and unforgettable island adventures. With dramatic volcanic landscapes, golden beaches, and warm Pacific waters, Hawaii offers the perfect balance of relaxation and discovery for all ages.

Snorkel along vibrant coral reefs, watch sea turtles glide through crystal clear waters, or learn to surf on palm-fringed beaches. Catch a glimpse of active volcanoes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, hike forest trails to stunning waterfalls, learn to hula at a traditional luau and embrace the islands’ Aloha spirit - you have made it to paradise.

As a family, Maui was our most visited Hawaiian Island - the beaches there are simply hard to beat. Make sure to book onto day trips or rent a car to see beyond your resort - Hawaii’s landscapes are truly extraordinary. Each island of Hawaii has a unique character, and island hopping is the best way to explore them. Whether you choose to visit the lush landscapes of Kauai, the volcanic wonders of the Big Island, the vibrant culture of Oahu, or the stunning beaches and scenic drives of Maui, Hawaii never fails to impress.

Oregon & Washington

Lesser visited but no less impressive, Oregon and Washington are fabulous states, boasting laidback cities and awe-inspiring natural beauty. From towering mountains, waterfalls, and rainforests to rugged, empty beaches, this corner of the country is a dream for families who love the outdoors.

Hike Mount Rainier’s beautiful trails, shop Portland’s quirky boutiques and markets, explore Olympic National Park’s diverse landscapes, and relax on your own stretch of stunning coastline - nature doesn’t get much better than this.

Head off-grid and enjoy nights under starry skies surrounded by nature - motorhome holidays are an ideal way to explore this stunning region. My family camping trips to Washington and Oregon were truly spectacular. As wildlife lovers from an early age, my sister and I were over the moon to spot raccoons around our campsite, whales breaching offshore, and giant, bright yellow banana slugs gliding through the rainforest.
