Borneo is a nature lover’s paradise, where unique flora and fauna thrive amid varied and spectacular scenery. Whether you choose a multi centre itinerary, a private tour, or a guided group adventure, there’s no shortage of incredible sights. As you journey through this beautiful destination, keep your camera ready - you won’t want to miss a moment.

Read on to discover some of the magnificent wildlife that a Borneo holiday has to offer and how to explore this unique destination.

Wildlife Checklist

Orangutans

Spot the world’s heaviest tree-dwelling animal in Borneo’s national parks and rehabilitation centres. One of the last places on Earth where you can see these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat, encountering orangutans is a true highlight of any Borneo trip. The two main places to do this are Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where rescued and rehabilitated orangutans are gradually reintroduced to the wild, offering visitors a rare and meaningful wildlife experience.

Did you know that humans share 97% of our DNA with orangutans? No wonder in Malay language 'orang' is also the word for 'man'. Orang Utan is the 'man of the jungle'.

Proboscis Monkeys

These long-nosed primates are endemic to Borneo and are most commonly seen along the Kinabatangan River. Instantly recognisable by their distinctive large noses and pot-bellied appearance, they live in social groups and are often spotted leaping through riverside trees or gathering at the water’s edge at dusk. As a rare and endangered species, seeing proboscis monkeys in the wild is a truly magical experience.

Bornean Pygmy Elephants

Keep your eyes peeled for the smallest elephant subspecies in the world, unique to Borneo. These shy, rare elephants are often spotted wading through rivers or browsing along forest edges. Estimated to be fewer than 1,500 of these gentle natured creatures left, every sighting is a remarkable holiday highlight.

Fabulous Fireflies

Look out for fireflies along Borneo’s rivers, where their spectacular bioluminescent displays light up the night. These tiny insects gather in mangroves and riverbanks, creating a magical, twinkling canopy that feels almost otherworldly. Watching them in action is a serene and unforgettable experience, perfect for ending a day filled with wonderful wildlife encounters.

Sun Bears

While elusive in the wild, you can get a close-up look at these small, curious bears at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Native to Borneo’s forests, sun bears are the smallest bear species in the world, with a distinctive golden chest patch. Visiting the centre offers a rare opportunity to learn about their behaviour and conservation up close.

Tropical Fish

Borneo’s waters are a dream for snorkelers and divers, teeming with an extraordinary array of tropical fish. Closer to shore, the reefs of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park - including Gaya Island - are easily accessible, with colourful parrotfish, angelfish, and clownfish darting among swaying anemones. Whether you’re exploring from a boat or simply wading into crystal clear lagoons, Borneo’s dazzling underwater world adds an unforgettable dimension to any beach holiday.
