City breaks are the perfect way to experience new cultures and experiences – and they only take a weekend! When planning, it is important to select the cities with the most versatility to have a well-rounded experience. Rome offers culture, countless sightseeing opportunities, and of course, food! Having visited there twice myself, it is one of my favourite cities and is perfect for an amazing weekend away.
Navigating a city as busy as Rome can be overwhelming, fortunately, there are a few easy and different ways to get around.
Extensive public transport options will take you anywhere you need to go. Typically, you will need to purchase a travel pass to travel on the city’s transport links, the best of these is a multi-day or a Roma pass which will cover travel on buses, trains, or metros.
Another way to get around are hop on, hop off buses which blend both sightseeing and efficiency. Similarly to public transport, passes will need to be purchased in advance - typically they offer 24, 48 and 72 hour tickets. The beauty of this travel style is that they follow a route which includes every major landmark, simply get off and explore and then re-join the route when convenient to you! Some even provide headphones with an audio guide, what more could you need?
In terms of an itinerary, I would firstly recommend venturing to the historic Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum as they’re all in the same place. Then, walk over to the gorgeous Trevi Fountain and make a wish as you toss a coin into the water. Walk to the nearby domed roof Pantheon, an amazing landmark to marvel at and finish the day on.
On day two, cross the river and head to the Vatican where you can easily spend a full day exploring its jaw dropping architecture and artifacts. Here, you will be able to see the striking St. Peter’s Basilica and of course, the unforgettable Sistine Chapel.
End your unforgettable weekend by witnessing a Roman sunset. Climb to the top of the Spanish Steps and soak in the majestic views. Then simply finish with a classic carbonara in an authentic ristorante followed by a scoop of gelato and a refreshing limoncello shot. The neighbourhoods with arguably the best food in Rome are Trastevere and the Jewish Ghetto, go and check them out!
