We spent an incredible week on The North Cape Line voyage from Oslo to Tromsø (full voyage Oslo to Bergen), visiting charming cities and experiencing unique culture whilst sailing the scenic Norwegian coastline through the Arctic with Hurtigruten's Signature Voyage.
We began in vibrant Oslo discovering Norway’s capital before sailing to Kristiansand, where we got to experience the highlights of the south coast and south cape on an all day shore excursion. On this tour we visited Lindesnes Lighthouse, a famous landmark that marks the southernmost point of the country where we enjoyed a traditional local lunch with views over the Skaggerak Strait. This was followed by a quick visit to the remarkable Under, the world’s largest underwater restaurant with Michelin Star status dining 5.5 metres below sea level, immersing guests in Norway’s marine life. The final stop and a lovely way to end the day was a visit to the northernmost vineyard, to taste the award-winning sparkling wine.
We sailed north through the picturesque towns of Ålesund and Brønnøysund, admiring the snowy scenery and peaceful fjords along the way before arriving in the breathtaking Lofoten Islands. There is so much on offer in this spectacular archipelago from sea kayaking, walking tours to sea eagle spotting rib adventures.
After an iconic Arctic Circle crossing, the trip ended in ‘The Paris of the North’, Tromsø which is the gateway to the Arctic, offering an abundance of shore excursions. We wandered to the stunning Arctic Cathedral followed by reindeer stew for lunch in the vibrant city centre.
Visit Norway’s iconic fjords and vibrant coastline whilst also having a very strong chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Hurtigruten are so confident the aurora will occur within sight of the ship of a voyage of 11 days or more, they will give you a 6 or 7 day voyage free of charge if not, calling it their ‘Northern Lights promise’. Hurtigruten are authentically Norwegian so it feels like travelling along the coast with a local, trying the local cuisine along the way and being a small ship means they can dock in less visited ports.
We travelled on MS Trollfjord, one of their Signature Voyages which included all inclusive food and drink and a large expedition team on board with daily lectures. These Signature sailing differ from Hurtigruten's Norway Coastal sailing as you will visit fewer ports of call but then gain more time in each place therefore being able to really experience every destination.
There were too many highlights in terms of places visited and experiences including the thrilling sea eagle rib adventure through the Lofoten Islands. However, a moment that really stood out was the crossing of the Arctic Circle ceremony where the famous Njord Troll made an appearance alongside the captain. This involved getting ‘baptised’, or in other words getting ice cold water poured over your head followed by a shot! It was very amusing and a bit of lighthearted fun for a special moment.
Ensure you bring lots of warm clothes as you will be outside Northern Lights spotting regularly and temperatures can get well below minus as you head north!
Book your shore excursions in advance to guarantee you don’t miss out as they will get booked up.
The scenery and voyages change with the seasons so be sure to research beforehand.
