A short flight brings you to Bergen, the gateway city to Norway’s spectacular fjords. This city showcases plenty of charm with a bustling harbour and fish market, beautiful buildings and the Floibanen funicular which provides epic views from the top of one of seven mountains surrounding the city. 

After spending a couple of nights in this vibrant city it was time to head along the coast to start my Norwegian fjord adventure. During my trip I visited the fairytale city of Alesund, the UNESCO World Heritage listed Geirangerfjord, Norway’s capital Oslo and the beautiful fjord village of Flam.

If you love being in the great outdoors, then you will love Norway. The region is breathtaking and offers a magnitude of adventure.  No matter where I stayed there was always the opportunity to do stunning hikes, mountain biking or hit the water for a rib safari or explore by kayak. 

If you are intrigued by Norway’s history then there are plenty of fascinating sites to visit, from the historical UNESCO World Heritage listed district of Bryggen in Bergen to the medieval Stave churches along the Sognefjord. In addition to this, there are some great ways to travel around the fjords including incredible rail journeys. Some real standout routes during my trip were the iconic Bergen Railway and Flam Railway offering spectacular views of varied landscape, cascading waterfalls and flowing rivers below.

My highlight was climbing the steps of Mount Askla in Alesund to enjoy the sunset over the city and the surrounding mountains and islands. It takes just over ten minutes to reach the top and the views are breathtaking.

Weather can change quickly in the fjords so I would always recommend taking some waterproof and thermal clothing- regardless of the season!
