Crete’s Mediterranean climate and glorious beaches make it the ideal base for those looking to soak up some sun on a relaxing beach break. With over 150 Blue Flag beaches to choose from, ranging from secluded pebble coves to family friendly sandy beaches, your biggest challenge will be deciding which beach to visit first!

Read on for my guide to the best beaches in Crete, to help make that decision a little easier.

Elafonisi Beach

Known for its pink sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, Elafonisi beach is often named as one of the best beaches in the world, not just Crete! Located in a nature reserve on the southwest of the island this is an excellent choice for those looking to enjoy a beach day among unspoiled nature, with a picture-perfect back drop.

Kedrodasos Beach

Nearby to popular Elafonisi Beach, offering a more secluded experience, Kedrodasos Beach is a great option for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist spots. Surrounded by an ancient juniper forest, sand dunes and striking rock formations this lesser-explored beach feels like paradise.

Balos Beach

With its rugged landscape and turquoise waters, it is no surprise that Balos Beach, also known as Balos Lagoon, is one of the most photographed spots on the island and is one of the best beaches in Crete. Located on the northwest tip of the island on the Gramvoussa peninsula, this unique lagoon is most conveniently reached by ferry from Kissamos. The lagoon’s warm, shallow waters make it the perfect spot for a swim.

Falassarna Beach

Golden sands, beautiful sunsets and a host of amenities, make Falassarna Beach a very popular choice. Despite its popularity Falassarna Beach maintains a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Located on Crete’s west coast and often sporting the largest waves on the island it is a popular choice with water sports enthusiasts, especially windsurfers.

Vai Beach

On the far eastern tip of Crete, hidden behind a lush palm tree forest, Vai Beach is known for its Caribbean style and sparkling clear waters. Straw umbrellas cover the beach’s golden curve of sand, adding to its laid-back charm.

Preveli Beach

Offering a somewhat different beach experience, Preveli Beach is where the Kourtaliotis River meets the sea. This sheltered beach, found on the island’s south coast is surrounded by a palm forest and dramatic cliffs. The climb down to the beautiful beach below is not for the faint hearted, but it is a popular choice for those looking to explore the areas picturesque hiking trails and panoramic viewpoints.

Frangokástello Beach

Framed by a 14th-century Venetian castle and the White Mountains of Kallikratis, it’s hard to imagine a more impressive beach backdrop. Located on the southwest coast of the island, Frangokástello Beach offers shallow waters and fine, golden sands, perfect for families. For little adventurers, what could be more magical than building sandcastles in the shadow of a real castle!
