The Best Hiking Holidays in the World

Hiking holidays are healthy, fun, invigorating and challenging… and nothing beats seeing a region using your own two feet! Opportunities for walking, trekking and hiking adventures are almost endless, but if I had to narrow it down, here’s my guide to some of the best hikes in the world.

Everest Base Camp Trek, Nepal

Nepal is a magnet for walkers and hikers from across the world and the Everest region needs little introduction. The views are unsurprisingly spectacular but what really stands out is the warmth, stoicism and patience of the wonderful Nepali people.

It’s hard to imagine anywhere being quite so well set up for hikers; teahouses offer a friendly smile and hearty food, the paths are well-maintained and the weather is crisp and dry for six months of the year. This, plus the incredible landscapes, makes Nepal one of the best hiking holiday destinations in the world.

Path of the Gods, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Rising high above the Mediterranean, the Path of the Gods is generally regarded as one of the greatest hiking holidays in Italy. The Amalfi Coast is a beautiful but bustling area, and the Path of the Gods offers an escape from the crowds below.

This hike winds through verdant olive groves, terraces and remarkable expanses of blue sky and sea. Look down to see the Amalfi Coast scattered with the vibrant tiled domes of Praiano and Positano, and onwards to the island of Capri. In the summer months, it is well worth a slight detour to Arienzo beach, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea.

Hollyford Track, New Zealand

In a nation of great hikes, walks and tracks, Hollyford Track stands out as one of New Zealand’s best. The three day walk follows the crystal clear waters of the Hollyford River through the stunning Fiordland National Park, while the Southern Alps loom large for much of the way.

You’ll walk through lush forest, beside a mighty river, alongside beautiful lakes then out to the wild West Coast. Approaching the coast, you may be fortunate enough to see native wildlife, including NZ fur seals, penguins, herons, and occasionally even dolphins! This is certainly one of the best hiking holidays in New Zealand.

Mont Blanc Circuit, France, Italy, Switzerland

Reaching the peak of Europe’s highest mountain is a hugely technical challenge, but it’s still eminently possible to spend seven days hiking a section of the famed Mont Blanc Circuit. This series of paths seamlessly link together to form one of Europe’s most scenic long-distance hiking trails.

There are a great variety of itineraries to choose from and all guarantee breathtaking views; it’s just a question of how long you have and what level of comfort you’re after!

The Inca Trail

Possibly one of the most famous and best hiking holidays in the world: the Inca Trail.

Travel to Peru to retrace the steps of the Incas – Peru's fascinating ancient civilisation. Travel from Cusco, through the fertile heartland of the Sacred Valley and to the magnificent Ollantaytambo ruins before the ultimate destination – Machu Picchu, one of the famed Seven Wonders of the World.
