As a first-time flyer with ITA, I was thoroughly impressed! The flights were excellent throughout, with all sectors operating on time. A standout feature was that even the short-haul flights had TVs on the backs of the seats, which added to the overall experience and made the journeys feel far more premium than expected for European short haul. Seating was comfortable and service was prompt with complimentary snacks and drinks aboard each flight.

Overview: Combining iconic landmarks, historic streets and a vibrant atmosphere, Rome was the perfect starting point for an amazing work trip with extremely passionate Italian suppliers that taught us about every nook and cranny Italy has to offer.

Highlight: One of the standout experiences in Rome was an interactive scavenger hunt around the city using tablets. Working in teams, we completed a series of challenges and fun twists while exploring some of Rome’s most famous sights. It was a unique and engaging way to experience the city beyond a traditional walking tour. 

Interesting Fact: Did you know that Rome is home to over 2,000 fountains? The most famous, the Trevi Fountain, attracts millions of visitors each year. 

Where We Stayed: 5★ Aleph Rome Hotel 

Hotel Top Tip: The Hilton Aleph offers luxury and a great location to explore places like Trevi and the Spanish Steps.

Overview: Gallipoli offered us a completely different side to Italy, with its relaxed coastal atmosphere, beautiful old town and rich history. Located on the Ionian Coast in Puglia, the town is known for its maze of winding streets, historic churches and sea views. During our stay we explored the old town on a guided walking tour and learnt about Gallipoli’s fascinating past as a strategic location that has been invaded many times throughout history. 

Highlight: We also took a day trip to Lecce, where we explored the city’s stunning baroque architecture, admired intricate sculptures and enjoyed a local wine tasting experience. 

Interesting Fact: Did you know that the name Gallipoli comes from the Greek “Kallípolis,” meaning “beautiful city”? 

Location Tip: Gallipoli is ideal for anyone looking for an authentic Southern Italy experience, with a mix of culture, coastline and excellent food and wine. 

Where We Stayed: 5★ Biancodonda

Hotel Top Tip: It may seem tempting to eat in the old town near the hotel, but we found this to be fairly cramped and not lots on offer, so eat on the mainland to get the best value and selection of food!

Overview: Matera was the standout destination of the trip. Famous for its ancient cave dwellings and dramatic stone architecture, the city has a completely unique atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Italy. 

During our stay we took part in a guided walking tour through the famous “Sassi” districts, exploring remarkable old buildings and learning more about Matera’s fascinating history. 

Highlight: Aside from the amazing food and striking views of the ravine that runs alongside the city, we were lucky enough to get guided round some of the oldest buildings in Matera. 

Interesting Fact: Did you know that Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world? Some of its cave dwellings date back over 9,000 years. 

Location Tip: Matera is perfect for anyone looking for a unique cultural experience and something beyond the classic Italian itinerary. It combines history, atmosphere and great value, making it ideal for those wanting a more authentic side of Italy. 

Where We Stayed: 5★ Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort

Hotel Top Tip: Put aside a morning to sit and have coffee in one of their luxury hammock-like chairs that overlooks one of the oldest churches in Matera and the ravine.

Overview: Locorotondo provided a more relaxed and authentic countryside experience during the final part of the trip. Known for its whitewashed streets, traditional buildings and peaceful atmosphere, it made an excellent base for exploring this part of Puglia. 

While staying here we visited Alberobello, famous for its iconic trulli houses. We explored the town on a guided walking tour and also took part in an olive oil tasting course, where we learnt more about local production methods and sampled regional olive oils. 

Highlight: We enjoyed an amazing olive oil/balsamic vinegar tasting to top it all off. 

Interesting Fact: Did you know that the trulli houses of Alberobello are UNESCO World Heritage listed? Their distinctive cone-shaped roofs were originally built without mortar so they could easily be dismantled centuries ago to avoid taxation. 

Location Tip: If you’re wanting to visit Alberobello, staying in Locorotondo can actually provide a better overall experience. Locorotondo has more restaurants, bars and atmosphere in the evenings, while still being within easy reach of Alberobello for sightseeing during the day. 

Where We Stayed: Leonardo Trulli Resort

Hotel Top Tip: Experience the hotel’s luxury lunch buffet, which offers a fantastic selection of local dishes and regional specialities in a beautiful countryside setting.

Throughout Puglia and Basilicata we travelled via private transfer, which proved to be essential. Unlike Northern Italy, the train network in Puglia is less connected, so private transfers made travelling between destinations much smoother and more efficient. 

This trip showcased a completely different side of Italy compared to the classic city itinerary. Southern Italy combines authentic experiences, luxury hotels, excellent food and wine, and great value for money, all while feeling far less crowded than some of Italy’s more traditional tourist hotspots. 

Matera was the standout destination of the trip, but every stop offered something unique, from the coastal charm of Gallipoli to the iconic trulli houses of Alberobello. Overall, this is a fantastic region for anyone looking for a more immersive and authentic Italian experience.
