Top 10 Things Our Travel Experts Would Never Travel Without

It’s hard to find a more avid bunch of travellers than the Trailfinders team – between us we’ve visited 99% of the world’s countries! So, it’s safe to say we know a thing or two about what to take on your holiday.

Aside from the obvious things (such as travel documents, chargers, insurance, vaccinations, our ViewTrail app etc) and of course the total peace of mind that booking with Trailfinders brings, here’s the top ten things that the team say they would never leave home without.

1. Packing cubes

The one thing I never knew I needed until I did! A super simple way to organise your luggage and prevent you pulling everything out to find what you need. I recommend packing an empty one to use as a laundry bag too. Compression ones work doubly hard, allowing you to squeeze twice as much in. Trust me, they will revolutionise your packing.

2. An eSIM

Don’t be stung by expensive roaming charges, beholden to poor free wi-fi or left without access to your social media apps. eSims are surprisingly affordable and simple to purchase before you leave home – you just need to activate once in destination to get online.

3. Water bottle

It’s always a good idea to take a refillable water bottle with you, but some brands such as the Aquapure Traveller (available at the Trailfinders Travel Clinic) have a built-in filter to allow you to top up with tap water anywhere in the world, using proven world-class water purification technology to remove all nasties.

4. A large lightweight scarf

Not just a stylish accessory – it’s perfect as a beach sarong, an extra layer if temperatures drop, a cover up or headscarf when visiting temples, a handy towel, eye mask or even as an impromptu shopping bag.

5. Compression socks

To wear on the plane as well as on any long car or train journeys included on your trip. Because they improve your circulation when sitting for long periods, they are a game changer. As well as helping prevent potential blood clots, they make a real difference in reducing swelling of your ankles and make your legs feel less tired and achy on arrival at your destination.

6. Tiger balm

An ointment based on traditional Chinese medicine, this little pot of magic clears stuffy noses, alleviates headaches, eases aches and soothes insect bites. It’s also handy to dab under your nose to mask any unpleasant odours you may encounter in public toilets etc.

7. Rash vest

If you love spending time on or in the water as I do, a quick drying, long sleeve rash vest (UV swim top) is indispensable to protect you from the sun and allows you to stay out as long as you fancy. You can pick one up from a sports shop at home, though most beach destinations will have plenty on sale and at an affordable price. I’ve had mine for years.

8. Mini fly spray

If you are heading to the tropics, I recommend taking a little can of fly spray (the stuff you spray in your room to kill mosquitoes, not what you spray on your body to deter them). Wearing insect repellent should always be non-negotiable, but spraying your room before heading out to dinner, means any pesky mozzies lurking in the shadows will be swiftly dealt with before your return, ensuring you a bite free sleep!

9. Pillowcase

Ideal for stuffing with a sweater or fleece to make an impromptu pillow on your travels and perfect if you are camping or overnighting on public transport. If you want to push the boat out, make it a silk one, so your slumbers are 5★ luxury wherever you sleep.

10. Bottle of hot sauce

If you like things spicy, many brands of favourite condiments now come in handy pocket-sized bottles, ideal for pepping up any meal when you are away. I’ve even got a tiny bottle of sriracha sauce on a key ring that I never leave home without!
