Stretching from the Black Sea in the west, to China in the east, with imperial cities, vast natural wilderness and grand mosques and churches in between, the Stans of Central Asia are fascinating and an unmissable destination. As one of the least travelled regions on the planet, this remote destination is perfect for the more adventurous, offering unique and diverse travel experiences.

Read on for our guide to the Stans, to help you make the most of your time in this incredible part of the world.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is renowned for its glorious Silk Road cities. Samarkand is awash with history, including the exquisite Registan Square, possibly the most recognisable of all Central Asia’s monuments. Ancient Bukhara is a wonderland of minarets, mosques and bazaars, while medieval Khiva utterly enchants with its mudbrick walled old town.

Discover the incredible Darvaza gas crater here. Known as the ‘Door to Hell’, this huge flaming pit of natural gas has been burning for over 50 years.
