Famed for its blend of modernity and historic tradition, as well as its vibrant, fast pace of life, Hong Kong is a city full of surprises. Known for boasting ‘the most beautiful skyline in the world’, the unique and iconic architecture makes the city a bucket list destination. Read on for our guide to where to stay in Hong Kong, to help you make the most of your visit.

Central – Hong Kong Island

Perhaps the most recognizable area of Hong Kong, Central is a frenetic hub of skyscrapers – what most people think of when they picture the city. As Hong Kong's business and retail heart, it boasts strong transport links. This is a great choice for where to stay in Hong Kong for first time visitors and for those passing through the city as part of a stopover en route to New Zealand or Australia, as all the main sites and tourist attractions are on your doorstep. Ferries depart from Victoria Harbour, and two rail lines run through the city via the MTR, connecting Central to the rest of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

In Central, you can peruse fabulous shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, and entertainment venues. With marble-adorned shopping arcades and splendid antique shops and art galleries, there is so much to see here! For stunning views, ride the tram to the top of Victoria Peak or take the Star Ferry to Kowloon.

Causeway Bay – Hong Kong Island

For those who love shopping, Causeway Bay is an excellent option for where to stay in Hong Kong! Situated on the north coast of Hong Kong Island facing Victoria Harbour, the area is full of life, hustle, and bustle. A stay here offers the convenience of having many dining options, drinking spots, and attractions right on your doorstep. Whether you prefer Western, Italian, or Japanese food, a wide range of gastronomic choices are available. For those seeking to make the most of Hong Kong’s nightlife, this is also a great spot! To relax and unwind, take a stroll through Causeway Bay’s Victoria Park, an oasis of calm in this energetic neighbourhood that features facilities including areas for tai chi, tennis courts, and a swimming pool.

Wan Chai – Hong Kong Island

A great option for a stay in Hong Kong is the Wan Chai district – Hong Kong’s entertainment district and one of the best areas in the city for nightlife, situated just to the right of Central. Once a small fishing village, the area has been modernised in recent years, with many stylish restaurants and bars popping up around the Star Street area. Popular options include ‘Samsen’ restaurant, serving exquisite Thai food, and ‘1963 Treee’ restaurant, offering delicious Taiwanese cuisine.

For music lovers, be sure to check out ‘The Wanch’, a fantastic, historic music bar with a wide variety of live music every night. Whether you want to savour the trendy atmosphere and aromas of the area, go photograph its heritage architecture, spot some of the unique tourist attractions, or just have a fun night out in this dynamic and bustling hub - Wan Chai is the place to be!

Tsim Sha Tsui – Kowloon

Known as one of the most densely populated places on the planet, Kowloon boasts a diverse mix of cultures, shops, and restaurants, making it a remarkable place to stay in Hong Kong. A stay in Tsim Sha Tsui, in the southern part of Kowloon, is the perfect choice for those opting for longer stays in Hong Kong and those on return visits. The district is home to a mix of small local shops and modern shopping centres, as well as a selection of excellent restaurants – these can often be a bit more authentic than those found in Central.

One of the area's star attractions is its breathtaking views across the harbour and city skyline. Visit the promenade in the evening to see "A Symphony of Lights" – the world’s largest permanent light and sound display, delivering a dazzling glow to Hong Kong’s phenomenal skyline and harbour. Getting around from Tsim Sha Tsui is easy, as it is well connected to other parts of the city via the Mass Transit Railway (MTR).

Mong Kok – Kowloon

Mong Kok is a great place to be if you want to be situated in a central, bustling part of Kowloon, surrounded by many of its vibrant markets. Popular markets to check out include the Ladies Market, where you can find everything from genuine vintage electronics to handmade jewelry. Another is the Fa Yuen Street Market (also known as "Sneaker Street"), where you are sure to find a wide variety of athletic shoes, as well as vintage clothing and streetwear. Also be sure to check out Hong Kong flower market for a delightful dose of regional botanical beauty.

Other than the energetic markets, be sure to wander down some of Mong Kok’s inviting side streets and alleys. These are often home to generations-old family-run shops where you can pick up unique and memorable gifts and souvenirs.

Yau Ma Tei – Kowloon

The Yau Ma Tei area of Kowloon is known for its blend of old and new. Striking historical buildings, such as the 1895 Tin Hau Temple Complex, a 1922 police station, and an 1865 temple, are seamlessly combined with modern architecture. Centrally located, you can also enjoy easy access to other parts of Hong Kong via the MTR.

If staying in this area, be sure to explore the Temple Street Night Market, arguably one of Hong Kong’s top attractions with block after block of street vendors. The Jade Market is another popular spot; with jade being a prized jewel in China due to its symbolism for good luck, this is the place to admire it. For evening performances, check out the Yau Ma Tei Theatre, which was once a pre-war cinema, still featuring its original neoclassical architecture.
