Perched on the edge of a volcanic caldera and surrounded by the shimmering Aegean Sea, Santorini feels like a dream. With iconic, white-washed houses, sapphire-domed churches, and mesmerising sunsets, this beautiful Greek island is arguably one of the most breathtaking places on earth.

Though the island is relatively small, choosing the right place to stay can greatly enhance your experience. Your ideal base will depend on the type of trip you're planning and your personal priorities. To help you make the most of your visit, here’s our guide to where to stay in Santorini.

Oia

Oia is undoubtedly the most iconic and photographed spot on Santorini. Famed for its white washed buildings, blue-domed churches, and luxury accommodation options, Oia is a postcard-perfect village that draws visitors from around the world. You’ll find the island’s best boutiques, galleries, and restaurants tucked along its winding paths, and multiple viewpoints showcasing some of the most breathtaking vistas on the island.

If you are short on time and considering where to stay in Santorini, Oia is an excellent option as it offers the quintessential island experience all in one place. It’s also a photographer’s paradise, filled with unforgettable sights - from the ruins of the old castle to the charming harbour at Ammoudi Bay below, and arguably the best sunsets on the island.

Fira

Fira is Santorini’s energetic capital. Here you will find stunning views of the Aegean Sea, whitewashed buildings, a range of accommodation options and a vibrant atmosphere. Packed with cafés, tavernas, museums, galleries, boutique shops, and lively nightlife, you’ll find no shortage of entertainment. Due to its central location, Fira also offers a convenient base for exploring the island, with buses available to nearly every village - perfect for those looking to get around without renting a car. It is also the starting point of the iconic Fira-to-Oia hike, which offers breathtaking caldera views.

Fira is where to stay in Santorini for first-time visitors, solo travellers, or anyone seeking an energetic, social base.

Imerovigli

Considered one of the most romantic villages in Santorini, Imerovigli offers luxury, seclusion and breathtaking sunsets. You’ll find elegant hotels perched along the caldera, cosy tavernas and upscale restaurants offering Mediterranean cuisine with panoramic views. Although it’s just a short walk from the bustling town of Fira, Imerovigli offers a much more serene experience. If you are looking for some adventure it is also home to the Skaros Rock hike, a moderately easy scenic trail, which leads to a striking rock formation and incredible views of the Aegean Sea.

The peaceful village of Imerovigli is the perfect choice for where to stay in Santorini for couples seeking a romantic getaway or for those seeking tranquillity, but still wishing to be close to Fira’s wide range of facilities.

Kamari

Located on the southeast coast of Santorini, Kamari offers visitors a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere with a range of accommodation options. With a long black pebble beach lined with cafes, seafood restaurants and bars, you’ll find laid back Kamari much less crowded than the ever-popular Fira and Oia. Enjoy early morning swims, scenic walks along the promenade, or watch a film at the island's famous open-air cinema. Nearby Ancient Thera offers panoramic views and an insight into the island’s history and if you want to explore more of Santorini, Kamari is well connected by a regular bus service.

Kamari is an ideal base for families, beach lovers, and anyone seeking a more laidback retreat after day trips to the island's hotspots.

Perivolos

Home to one of Santorini’s best black sand beaches, Perivolos is lively but also relaxed. You’ll find beachfront restaurants offering fresh seafood, stylish beach clubs, calm waters, and a range of water sports. From here, it’s easy to explore neighbouring Perissa, just a short walk away along the coast, offering more dining and shopping options. A quick drive also takes you to Akrotiri, where you can visit the island’s famous archaeological site and the stunning Red Beach - perfect for a day of discovery beyond the sun and sand.

Perivolos is an ideal destination for couples, groups, and families alike, offering a more laidback alternative to the busier areas of Fira and Oia without sacrificing the island’s signature beauty and energy.

Megalochori

A peaceful, traditional village in Santorini known for its charming narrow streets, historic Venetian mansions, and local wineries, where you can taste the famous Assyrtiko wine. Megalochori offers a more authentic experience with quiet tavernas serving delicious traditional Greek cuisine and beautiful surroundings. The village itself is walkable, but to explore Santorini’s nearby attractions, such as Emporio - another traditional village nearby with historic castles and charming streets, it would be best to rent a car.

Megalochori is where to stay in Santorini for those seeking culture and relaxation away from the crowds.

Firostefani

Firostefani is a quiet village just north of Fira, offering stunning caldera views with fewer crowds. It features charming, whitewashed buildings, cosy cafes, range of accommodation options and excellent restaurants. Although it’s only a 15 minute walk to Fira’s shops and vibrant nightlife, Firostefani feels like a world away, with its peaceful streets.

Firostefani is the perfect location in Santorini for those seeking the best of both worlds - a tranquil retreat, just a stone’s throw from the island’s energetic capital.
