Where to Stay in Vancouver

Every time I return to Vancouver, I make a point of exploring somewhere new, from oceanfront pathways to hidden neighbourhoods tucked between mountains and sea. What I’ve learned is that where you stay in Vancouver changes everything about your trip! This vibrant West Coast Canadian city has distinct pockets, each with its own vibe, pace and experiences.

After several stays across the city, here’s my guide to where to stay in Vancouver so you can pick the one that feels right for your trip.

Downtown & Coal Harbour

If you picture Vancouver as a postcard, you’re probably thinking of Downtown and Coal Harbour. Skyscrapers framed by mountains, sparkling water on one side, and city energy on the other; it’s classy, lively and endlessly walkable.

I’ve stayed in this area a few times when I’ve wanted to do everything Vancouver has to offer. From strolling the seawall at sunrise to grabbing an afternoon coffee before exploring Gastown, this is the ideal choice for where to stay in Vancouver for first timers.

Why this area of Vancouver is great:

• Easy access to Stanley Park and the seawall.

• Walking distance to shopping, restaurants and nightlife.

• Best views of the North Shore mountains and marina front.

Gastown

Gastown feels like Vancouver’s artistic older sibling; cobblestone streets, vintage lampposts, design boutiques and tiny cafés where the baristas remember your name. Every morning I wandered out of my door, I was greeted by the scent of freshly brewed espresso and the sound of the steam clock whistling its tune.

Gastown is compact and walkable, but it’s also one of the most atmospheric areas to stay in Vancouver if you’re into blending historic charm with modern eating and drinking scenes.

Why this area of Vancouver is great:

• Cobblestone streets and unique architecture.

• Incredible food – everything from Asian fusion to fine dining.

• Endless boutique shopping.

Yaletown

Yaletown first won me over with its old industrial warehouses turned into glossy lofts, cafés and restaurants. Grab a late brunch here, then spend your afternoon wandering around the marina before settling into dinner and drinks that go late into the night.

Yaletown feels polished but never pretentious. The vibe is stylish yet relaxed – like Vancouver’s answer to cool without trying too hard.

Why this area of Vancouver is great:

• Trendy restaurants and bars.

• Marina pathways perfect for sunset strolls.

• Central location with easy transit access.

Friends in Vancouver

Kitsilano (Kits)

If you’re looking for a neighbourhood with a local vibe, Kitsilano (or ‘Kits’) is where it’s at. I fell for this area of Vancouver the moment I stepped onto Kits Beach and watched the surfers catch waves against the backdrop of sparkling water and distant mountains. It felt more like a seaside town than part of a major city.

Kits is all about active living and outdoor culture; bike paths, yoga studios, farmers markets, and casual restaurants where everyone seems to know each other’s dogs by name!

Why this area of Vancouver is great:

• Easy access to beaches and outdoor activities.

• Laid-back local vibe.

• Cafés, shops and farmers markets.

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is creative, neighbourly and full of soul – a hub for local artists, independent shops, craft breweries and incredible bakeries.

I stayed in this area one spring and loved exploring all it has to offer – it’s an area that quickly felt like home. It’s an ideal option for where to stay in Vancouver if you’re looking for a more quirky, local experience.

Why this area of Vancouver is great:

• Hip local scene with plenty of character.

• Breweries, cafés and vintage shops.

• Not overwhelmed by tourists.

West End

I love the West End for its peaceful charm and unbeatable access to Stanley Park. One morning here I rented a bike and spent a couple of hours circling the seawall, stopping only to take in the skyline, watch kayaks drift by, and grab a drink by the water.

The streets here are lined with trees, and it’s quieter than Downtown but still just a short stroll or drive from major attractions.

Why this area of Vancouver is great:

• Close to Stanley Park and English Bay.

• Quiet streets with residential charm.

• Perfect balance of city and nature.

So, where should you stay in Vancouver?

You honestly can’t go wrong choosing where to stay in Vancouver. But thinking about the kind of trip you want might help you to narrow it down. Want iconic views and instant access to transport? Downtown or Coal Harbour. Craving boutique charm and foodie experiences? Gastown or Mount Pleasant. Looking for slow mornings and salty air? Kitsilano or the West End.
