CANADA’S TOP 3 BACKPACKER DESTINATIONS

For outdoor action, cities brimming with culture and breathtaking scenery, Canada is the perfect place for a backpacking adventure! Here are our top three picks for destinations to get a taste of all Canada has to offer.

1. Banff

The mighty Rocky Mountains are a must see, and there is no better introduction to this remarkable region than beautiful Banff!

This charming resort town is easy to reach from Calgary and a hub for outdoor adventurers. In the surrounding national park discover sights such as the crystal-clear waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake and jaw dropping mountain views from Yoho Valley. Your photos of this unbeatable scenery will be sure to make your friends and family jealous.

In Banff exhilarating activities are on the agenda year-round. In summer hiking, cycling, horseback riding and kayaking are all great ways to explore the outdoors. Throughout the winter months the area is transformed into a snow-covered wonderland, where thrill seekers can get their fill of skiing, snowboarding and tubing.

2. Toronto

In Canada’s largest and most diverse city there is something for everyone, with exciting events in music, arts and sports filling the calendar throughout the year.

While in Toronto be sure to check out the distillery district, the trendiest area of the city. Set in industrial Victorian buildings you can find galleries, shops selling unique gifts and clothes, and the best coffee shops and bars the city has to offer. Nearby pay a visit to the St Lawrence Market, where you can pass hours wandering through stalls taking in the sights, smells, and flavours of Toronto’s most delicious food.

Towering above the rest of the skyline at 553 metres, the CN tower is impossible to miss. For panoramic cityscape views head up the tower to the viewing platform. Real daredevils can take on the EdgeWalk, the highest external walk on a building in the world.

Finally, tick off a bucket list item by taking a day trip from the city to Canada’s number one tourist destination, the roaring Niagara Falls. For the ultimate experience here book on to a Voyage to the Falls boat tour and get up close to the falls, although be warned you will get soaked!

3. Montréal

Super cool Montréal should not be missed off any Canadian itinerary. In beautiful Old Montréal, charming cobblestone streets are brimming with hidden gems, with cafés, restaurants and shops to be explored. While the city boasts many galleries, art is not confined to the inside here- take a stroll down vibrant Saint Laurent Boulevard where the streets come alive with murals and street art!

Canada’s national sport, ice hockey, was first invented in the city and Montréal boasts the world’s oldest team, ‘The Canadiens’, playing since 1909. Any sports fans visiting the city should catch a game for a thrilling way to experience Canadian culture.

Foodies will be in heaven in Montréal, home to the tastiest poutine (the ultimate comfort food) and mouth-watering maple syrup in abundance. In fact, 70% of the world’s maple syrup is produced within Québec province meaning there is no better place to get your hands on a bottle to take home as the best souvenir of your Canadian adventure.
