When most people think of Thailand, they picture turquoise waters, full moon parties and pad Thai on every corner. While this version of Thailand does exist – and it’s great – there’s a whole other side that’s quieter, deeper and wildly more authentic. That’s what the Real Thailand tour by Intrepid is all about. Over 15 days, this small group adventure winds through Thailand’s bustling cities, peaceful villages, misty mountains and lush jungles. It’s not about five star hotels or curated Instagram shots, it’s about real people, local food and experiences that stick with you long after your tan fades.
Day 1: Your first stop is Bangkok, the most common (and arguably the greatest) place to start any Thailand trip. Thailand’s capital city is a place that somehow makes total chaos feel alive and electric. This evening, explore the night markets and a few local bars with your new friends.
Day 2: On day two, spend the day discovering Bangkok with the opportunity to explore independently or participate in an optional activity booked through Intrepid such as a Tuk Tuk Experience Urban Adventure, a Thai Massage, or a visit to the Grand Palace. Afterwards, hop on an overnight train up to Chiang Mai.
Day 3: After a surprisingly restful night’s sleep, arrive at charming Chiang Mai, known for its stunning temples, bustling markets, rich traditions and incredible food and coffee scene. Spend the day however you choose; maybe cycle around the city, join a cooking class, or visit Doi Sethep Temple.
Day 4: The hilltribe trek begins! Take in the views of the natural forests and remote scenery. Tonight’s destination is the Mae Ma Nai Hilltribe Village where you’ll be welcomed with a local homecooked dinner.
Day 5: Wake up to the natural sounds of the jungle wildlife and get ready for a full day of hiking. On this hike, you’ll explore other hilltribe villages along the way and eventually reach Pong Ngan Lahu Village. After two active days, take some time to rest your legs and enjoy the serene surroundings.
Day 6: Kick off today’s adventure with kayaking toward Sop Kai Village. From here, choose to return to Chiang Mai via private transfer or opt for some adrenaline with whitewater rafting. In the evening, explore the city and reward yourself with some well-deserved khao soi, the dish Chiang Mai is famous for!
Day 7: A free day in Chaing Mai with plenty of options, such as a Muay Thai class, cooking class, or a visit to Chiang Chill Elephant Sanctuary. Later, board an overnight train back to Bangkok.
Day 8: Arrive back in Bangkok and the rest of the day is free to explore the iconic city. In the evening, a new group of travellers will join – spend some time getting to know the newcomers over dinner or drinks.
Day 9: In the morning, visit some of Bangkok’s most iconic sites including the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Later, board on another overnight sleeper train heading south to Surat Thani.
Days 10 & 11: Continue the journey to Koh Samui, an island known for its nightlife, snorkelling and its stunning natural scenery. Spend two full days relaxing or partying on the beach – your choice!
Day 12: Travel from Koh Samui to Khao Sok National Park, Thailand’s wettest region and home to one of the world’s oldest rainforests. A highlight is the evening safari on a longtail boat deep into the jungle (don’t forget your mosquito spray!). Then, head to your floating raft house accommodation above the water.
Day 13: Spend the morning on a jungle hike where you might spot elephants, hornbills and langur monkey, before reaching a beautiful panoramic viewpoint. Later, continue to Phuket, stopping along the way at the Khao Lak Tsunami Memorial and the Royal Thai Navy Sea Turtle Conservation Centre. Upon arrival in Phuket, unwind with a beach evening.
Days 14 & 15: Phuket is the perfect place to relax at the end of this action-packed tour. Famous for its white-sand beaches, the island also offers options for those still hungry for adventure. Why not visit an elephant sanctuary or take a day trip out to Koh Phi Phi island?
