14 Nights in Sri Lanka & the Maldives

When it comes to bringing together adventure and leisure, it’s hard to top the neighbouring island nations of Sri Lanka and the Maldives. These two spellbinding destinations offer exploration and relaxation on an unparalleled scale. From history, culture and scenery to picture perfect paradise, here is how to plan the ultimate dream getaway.

Day 1: Negombo

Welcome to Sri Lanka! After landing in Colombo you will immediately transfer to the beachside town of Negombo for your first night.

Day 2: Cultural Triangle

Wake up and drive to the Cultural Triangle, your base for the next three nights. If you want to make the most of Negombo before heading off, you could always opt for an early morning visit to the local fish market.

Day 3: Cultural Triangle - Polonnaruwa

Visit the former capital of Polonnaruwa, built during the 11th and 12th Centuries and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the ruins of its ancient Royal Palace and temples before spending the afternoon relaxing in the beautiful surroundings.

Day 4: Cultural Triangle - Sigiriya & Minneriya NP

Start the day at Sigiriya or ‘Lion Rock’, an impressive rock fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hike to the top is fairly strenuous but worthwhile to see rock frescoes, the ruins of the 5th Century palace and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Later drive to Minneriya National Park for a game drive.

Days 5-6: Kandy

Head to the scenic city of Kandy via the Dambulla cave temples, a complex of five caves filled with Buddha images and statues, reached by a hike to the top of a sloping rock. Spend the following morning exploring Kandy with highlights including the bustling market, the British Garrison Cemetery and the historic Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Day 7: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Today you will journey on one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Pass by emerald-hued plantations as you wind your way to Nanu Oya station before transferring by road to your hotel in the heart of the tea producing region.

Day 8: Nuwara Eliya to Negombo

Take a walk around the town centre of Nuwara Eliya, passing buildings which date from its time as a British hill station, before transferring to Negombo for your final night in Sri Lanka.

Days 9-14: Angsana Velavaru

Now is the time to depart for paradise! Take the short flight to the Maldives and hop on a sea plane transfer to your home at Angsana Velavaru. Translating from Dhivehi as ‘turtle island’, this stunning, all inclusive resort offers an oasis of tranquillity in a secluded setting with stunning white sand beaches, turquoise waters and an impressive house reef teeming with life. Boasting an infinity pool, four restaurants, two bars and even an onsite marine lab, a week here is sure to deliver the quintessential dream Maldivian escape.
