There’s something about watching people travel across the world that makes you want to pack a bag and head off on an adventure yourself. And with Celebrity Race Across the World returning to our screens this October, there’s plenty to inspire your next holiday.

This time, four celebrity pairs will swap comfortable hotels and easy flights for local buses, boats and trains as they make their way from Malaysian Borneo all the way to Melbourne in Australia. Along the way they’ll encounter tropical rainforests, fascinating cultures, islands and Australia’s exciting cities.

The route spans three countries and two continents, with the teams relying on their own resourcefulness to reach the finish line. While the race is all about finishing first, these are destinations that are worth slowing down for!

Read on for our guide to the amazing locations from the latest Race Across the World series, to inspire your next holiday.

Kuching, Malaysian Borneo

The race begins in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. It’s a great starting point for an adventure, with a relaxed waterfront, colourful markets and a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous cultures.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the city’s feline theme. Kuching means ‘cat’ in Malay, and you’ll spot cat statues and quirky cat-themed artwork dotted around the streets. It’s a fun detail that gives the city plenty of character.

Spend some time wandering along the Kuching Waterfront, where traditional buildings sit alongside modern landmarks, or head into the city’s markets to sample local specialities. Sarawak laksa, a fragrant noodle soup, is a must-try, while kolo mee, a dish of dry noodles tossed in a savoury pork and shallot mixture, is another local favourite.

But the real draw for most visitors is what lies beyond the city centre. Kuching is an excellent base for exploring Borneo’s rainforests and wildlife, and Bako National Park is a particular highlight, with jungle trails, secluded beaches and the chance to spot proboscis monkeys among the mangroves.

Borneo’s rainforests and wild landscapes

Beyond Kuching, the journey takes the teams through the heartlands of Borneo, where dense rainforest, winding rivers and remote communities offer a very different experience from city life.

Borneo is one of the world’s great wildlife destinations. Its ancient forests are home to orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants and an extraordinary variety of wildlife. For travellers, this is a chance to get closer to nature and discover a side of South East Asia that feels like a world away from its busy beach resorts.

There are a few different ways to experience the island’s wild side. You could join a guided group tour, such as Wild Sarawak with Intrepid Travel, or embark on your own private touring option such as our Journey through Sarawak itinerary. Both options include a visit to the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre – an orangutan rehabilitation centre – which is a truly special experience.

Travel here can be slower and less predictable than in more developed destinations, but that’s all part of the appeal. Rather than rushing between the sights, you’ll have time to appreciate the surroundings and learn more about the communities that call the island home.

If wildlife is high on your list, consider extending your trip to include Sabah to explore its orangutan conservation centres and the wildlife-rich Kinabatangan River.

Melbourne, Australia

The final destination is Melbourne, Australia’s cultural capital and the finish line for this year’s celebrity race. It’s a fitting end for such a varied journey, with a mix of art, food, sport, and easy-going neighbourhood life.

Melbourne is famous for its laneways, where colourful street art, independent boutiques and small cafés are tucked between historic buildings. Spend a morning exploring the city’s coffee scene, browse its galleries or simply wander without a fixed plan. Some of the best discoveries are found down the side streets.

Food is a big part of Melbourne’s appeal, with everything from casual brunch spots to acclaimed restaurants and lively markets. The city’s multicultural influences are reflected in its dining scene, making it a particularly good destination for anyone who likes building a holiday around trying new things.

There’s plenty to explore beyond the city centre too. Take a day trip along the Great Ocean Road to see its spectacular coastal scenery or head into the Yarra Valley for vineyard visits and countryside views.
