Ilulissat Icefjord, Greenland

Discovering Greenland

By Jordan Brown

I embarked on an unforgettable summer expedition to discover the raw beauty of Greenland under the midnight sun, sailing through majestic fjords framed by towering icebergs and dramatic Arctic scenery. From colourful coastal villages to vast, untouched wilderness, each experience revealed the wonders of this undiscovered land.

Read on to learn more about my experiences in this ethereal landscape.

Setting sail for western Greenland from Iceland’s charming capital, Reykjavik, I knew I was heading somewhere remote, but what I didn’t fully appreciate was just how far off the beaten track it truly is. Crossing into Arctic waters was a milestone moment for me, fulfilling a lifelong dream to witness one of the Earth’s most remote frontiers and to hopefully catch a glimpse of an elusive polar bear roaming free in its natural habitat.

As we approached north of the Arctic Circle, the light changed with the long summer days stretching late into the evening under the midnight sun. It felt surreal to look out at 11pm and see bright daylight reflecting off scattered icebergs and calm seas. Being in a place where nature dictates the rhythm of life rather than the clock was something I quickly grew to love.

Our first stop and one of the most exciting highlights was visiting Ilulissat and seeing the Ilulissat Icefjord firsthand, the contrast between town and fjord is striking. The quaint town, known as “Iceberg City” is filled with warmth and intrigue from the locals, we explored the art gallery and stopped in the cafè before visiting the fish market. Nothing could have prepared me for the sights of Ilulissat Icefjord, the scale of the massive icebergs is an incredibly awe-inspiring experience, some towering several storeys high as they drift silently through the fjord.

Further north, we discovered the fjord systems around Uummannaq which were equally as memorable. The town itself, set against a mountain, felt incredibly isolated. With only a small population and colourful houses clustered along the shore, it offered a genuine insight into Greenlandic life, shaped by harsh winters and a deep connection to the sea. Visiting places like this made me appreciate how different daily life is compared to anywhere I had travelled before.

Sailing through Disko Bay was another standout moment, the bay is famous for its endless icy landscape, with icebergs of every imaginable shape and shade of blue drifting through the bay, constantly changing position with wind and current. As we sailed gently into Disko Bay, the moment I had been hoping for was finally upon us, a polar bear sighting! Standing on the open deck with my fellow explorers, witnessing this majestic giant effortlessly searching for prey was beyond magical.

Other wildlife sightings also transformed the journey into something extraordinary. Seeing whales surfacing in the distance from the ship, a diverse mix of seabirds circling above tall cliffs and sleepy seals resting on floating ice. Every encounter unfolded on nature’s terms, a powerful reminder that we were guests in an immense, untamed world.

What I loved most about this journey was its sense of authenticity. Greenland doesn’t cater to mass tourism. There are no big cruise terminals or souvenir lined promenades. Instead, there are quiet harbours, open tundra, and conversations with locals who are genuinely curious about where you have come from.

By the time we returned south, I felt I had experienced a side of the Arctic that few people ever see. For me, travelling so far off the beaten track was not about ticking off landmarks, it was about standing in front of ancient ice, under endless daylight, and feeling very small in the best possible way.
