Our journey began in the vibrant district of Miraflores, Lima’s bustling hub of culture, commerce, and coastal beauty. After a smooth flight, we arrived at our luxurious accommodations in this upscale area, known for its scenic parks and stunning ocean views. In the evening, we had the chance to stroll along the Miraflores boardwalk, a picturesque spot offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The area’s lively atmosphere, with its trendy cafes, art galleries, and green spaces, provided the perfect introduction to Peru’s charm.

Dinner that night was an exceptional experience, with a selection of local dishes highlighting Peru’s famed gastronomy. Peruvian cuisine, celebrated for its diversity and bold flavours, features everything from ceviche to the famed pisco sour cocktail. It was the perfect start to a journey that would continue to highlight the country’s incredible culinary offerings.

The next leg of our trip took us deep into the heart of the Amazon rainforest aboard the Zafiro, a luxurious five star riverboat. The Amazon is a place of unparalleled natural beauty, and this cruise allowed us to immerse ourselves in its mysteries while enjoying the comfort of world-class amenities.

Over three nights, we navigated the winding waterways of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in the Amazon. The Zafiro was a perfect base, with large, comfortable suites that provided sweeping views of the river and jungle. The boats crew were exceptional, offering guided excursions that brought us face-to-face with the flora and fauna of this incredible ecosystem.

During our excursions, we encountered rare species including pink dolphins, and a wide array of tropical birds. We also ventured into the dense jungle on foot, learning about the indigenous plants used for medicine and survival. The Amazon’s beauty was both awe-inspiring and humbling, and we left with a deeper appreciation for this vast, biodiverse region.

Our journey continued south to Paracas, a coastal town known for its natural beauty and the nearby Paracas National Reserve. After a scenic drive, we arrived at our luxurious beachfront accommodation, where we spent the night with the vast desert stretching before us and the sea beyond.

In Paracas, we were introduced to the rich history of pisco, Peru’s national drink. We visited a local distillery for an in-depth pisco-making tour, where we learned about the production process from grape harvest to distillation. The tasting session was the highlight, offering us the chance to sample different varieties of pisco and understand why it’s an essential part of Peruvian culture.

Later, we boarded a boat for a nature cruise around the Ballestas Islands, a marine sanctuary home to thousands of sea birds, sea lions, and even the occasional penguin. The landscape was surreal, with striking rock formations and a sense of tranquillity that allowed us to observe these creatures in their natural habitat.

In the afternoon, we set off on a thrilling desert safari, driving through the arid dunes in 4x4 vehicles. The vastness of the desert, with its striking contrast to the nearby coastline, was an awe-inspiring sight. Our guide explained how this unique landscape plays a vital role in local culture and how ancient civilizations adapted to these conditions.

Next, we flew to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. A city rich in history, Cusco is known for its fusion of Inca architecture with Spanish colonial influences. After settling into our hotel, we joined a local chef for a cookery class where we learned how to prepare traditional Andean dishes, such as alpaca meat and quinoa soup. It was a hands-on experience that gave us a deeper understanding of the region’s culinary heritage.

That evening, we had the chance to explore the cobblestone streets of Cusco, taking in the mesmerizing blend of Incan stonework and colonial buildings. The city’s vibrant energy, mixed with its profound historical significance, made it clear why Cusco is considered the gateway to the Sacred Valley.

Our journey continued with a night in the Sacred Valley, a region filled with breathtaking landscapes and ancient Inca sites. Nestled between the towering Andean peaks, the valley was once the heart of the Inca Empire’s agricultural production. Here, we stayed at a tranquil resort, surrounded by nature and a rich cultural history. It was a peaceful retreat before embarking on our most anticipated adventure.

The highlight of our trip was, without a doubt, our visit to Machu Picchu. After an early morning train ride through the stunning Urubamba Valley, we arrived at the ‘Lost City of the Incas’, perched high in the mountains with views that seemed to stretch on forever. Stepping onto the ancient terraces of Machu Picchu was a surreal experience and a reminder of the Inca civilization’s incredible architectural and engineering prowess.

As we wandered through the site, our guide explained the history and significance of the structures, offering insight into the culture and beliefs of the people who built this marvel. Standing at the entrance, looking out over the mist-shrouded ruins, we were struck by the sheer magnificence of this UNESCO World Heritage site. It was a fitting end to an unforgettable journey through Peru.
