It might be 25 years since my husband and I got married, but our honeymoon remains one of the most incredible travel experiences of our lives.
Granted our honeymoon was rather unusual, lasting almost 2 years, spanning 5 continents and 33 countries (we couldn’t agree exactly where to go so went everywhere on our list!). This involved some fairly drastic decisions including taking a sabbatical from our jobs, renting our house out and finding a temporary home for the cat which combined with planning a wedding meant stress levels went through the roof at times. However, we consoled ourselves that we’d have 2 years of not a care in the world to get over it!
But what was truly special was our honeymoon wishlist, or our ‘wanderlist’ as we referred to it at the time. Like many couples we’d been living together for a number of years before deciding to tie the knot. We didn’t need a new toaster, fancy crockery or crystal wine glasses. Instead, we wanted unforgettable moments, forever memories and frankly a bit of magic.
So we compiled a list of 100 bucket list experiences on our route from a helicopter flight over Iguazú Falls to meeting giraffes and orphan baby elephants in Nairobi, from a cookery class in Kerala’s Backwaters to afternoon tea at Raffles Hotel, from climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge to a scenic flight over Everest, from diving with manta rays in Tahiti to a skydive in New Zealand.
It also included tickets to the Rio Carnival and a football match at the Maracana as well as more ‘practical’ things like funding a year’s supply of toilet roll and a beer in every major stop in each hemisphere. Our guests absolutely loved sharing in our plans and being able to contribute to the honeymoon - some choosing things they had already done, others things they wish they had, and some chose challenges they would never have the guts to do but were happy for us to try on their behalf.
But the best bit was after every experience we sent them a thank you note with photo of us enjoying what they had bought us. Now you wouldn’t do that with your new gift toaster would you, saying “thanks I’ve just made some toast”?!
Luckily things have moved on significantly since our wanderlist when my very obliging parents collected and administered the contributions (thanks Dad!). Trailfinders offer a fantastic Honeymoon Wishlist service which is the perfect way for your friends and family to provide you with the ultimate gift of travel.
And it couldn’t be easier - our free of charge wishlist can be set up at any time, even before you've made your travel plans. You’ll have your own personalised website where you can post your honeymoon plans so that friends and family can share in your excitement, make a contribution to your dream honeymoon and send their congratulations.
We'll provide you with personalised guest cards (electronic and/or printed) for your invitations and each time your guests contribute, we’ll send you an alert plus an automated thank you on your behalf.
Contributions can be made online, over the phone or in one of our Travel Centres. They will be held safely in our ATOL approved independently operated Trust Account before being transferred to your Trailfinders honeymoon or, if you are yet to book, sent to you as a Trailfinders Electronic Gift Card, valid indefinitely, for future use.
And of course we make booking your honeymoon a breeze too. Every honeymoon we create is tailored just for you, by some of the best travel consultants in the business, who between them have travelled to 99% of the world’s countries. As the team who have quite literally been, they are well placed to suggest unmissable experiences whether you are heading to Antigua or Zimbabwe, fancy an active adventure or a blissful beach stay, going for 2 weeks or 2 years - whatever type of honeymoon you’re after, Trailfinders have it covered.
Once we've helped you create your dream honeymoon, combine with our Honeymoon Wishlist service and you can kiss goodbye to that toaster. Let your nearest and dearest give you the world instead.
