In this series, we share recent experiences had by Trailfinders staff on their travels. Whether it’s a unique place to stay or an interesting region to visit, you’ll get inspiration from those who have been.

This edition sees Damian Watchman discuss his visit to vibrant Rio De Janeiro on a recent Trailfinders staff trip to Brazil.

Where?

Rio a city that truly lives up to its legendary reputation. Nestled between the sparkling sea, lush jungle, and dramatic mountains, Rio de Janeiro boasts one of the most spectacular settings imaginable for a city. It’s an excellent gateway to the wonders of South America, making it a perfect starting or ending point for a wider adventure, yet it holds more than enough allure to be a magnificent destination in its own right. From its world famous beaches to iconic landmarks, Rio pulsates with an energy that captivates you day and night.

During my stay, I had the privilege of experiencing the 5★ Copacabana Palace, a Belmond hotel, arguably the most famous hotel in South America. Perfectly situated in the heart of its namesake beach, this iconic establishment has welcomed the most glamorous guests for decades, offering a blend of historic charm and unparalleled luxury.

When?

Rio de Janeiro is a fantastic destination no matter the season.

Summer (Dec-Feb): Temperatures can soar past 30°C, and the city truly comes alive with Carnival, drawing crowds from around the globe.

Autumn (Mar-May): Enjoy milder temperatures and fewer crowds, perfect for exploring comfortably.

Winter (Jun-Aug): Experience the least rainfall and pleasant temperatures in the mid-20s, ideal for sightseeing.

Spring (Sep to Nov): One of the best times to visit, that sweet spot of sunshine when temperatures hover between 22°C and 30°C. Perfect for soaking up rays on the beach and exploring the city without melting.

Why go?

While the majestic Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer), Sugar Loaf Mountain, and the sun-kissed beaches are essential, they're just the beginning. Immerse yourself in local culture by catching a football match with the passionate locals at the iconic Maracanã Stadium or dance the night away to rhythmic samba at one of Lapa's lively clubs. The incredible food and bustling neighbourhoods only add to the many reasons to savour every moment of a visit to this magnificent city.

Highlight

The Unforgettable View from Corcovado.

Corcovado isn't just the most recognizable symbol of Rio; it offers truly spectacular, sprawling views over the entire city. From the golden sands of Ipanema to the Maracanã, it's hard to imagine another vantage point that comes close to capturing such breathtaking views.

Top Tip

Take a stroll along the famous promenades of Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches and soak in the atmosphere. Watch the locals or simply relax with friend. Rio’s vibrant beach culture is on full display. Be sure to pause at one of the beachside restaurants for a refreshing caipirinha and take in the stunning views.
