In this series, we share recent experiences had by Trailfinders staff on their personal holidays. Whether it is a unique place to stay or an interesting region to visit, you’ll get inspiration from those who have been.

In this edition, our South Africa Destination Manager, Emily Peopall, tells us about her epic adventure through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Where?

Southern Africa is the ultimate destination for budding explorers and the intrepid at heart! By combining countries across the region, you will find yourself on an epic adventure. My journey started in Johannesburg, South Africa where I travelled overland on a guided group tour through one of the world's most unique safari destinations, Botswana, before crossing into Zimbabwe to reach the mighty Victoria Falls.

After a week of wild camping, it was time to indulge in some luxury. We crossed into Zambia for a stay at the incredible Royal Livingstone Hotel before catching a flight to Cape Town to sample some of the world’s best wine in South Africa’s breathtaking Cape Winelands.

When?

It is important to consider what you want out of your trip to Southern Africa when deciding when to go. For example, if you wish to observe Victoria Falls in all their glory when they are full, then June to September is a great time to visit. To experience the Okavango Delta on a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) journey it’s important to travel when the water levels remain high which is typically June to August.

Why Go?

The diversity across Southern Africa is compelling and makes you to want to return time and again, with plenty of routes to explore, more wildlife to see and new once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The Southern end of Africa is bursting with exceptional wildlife and a variety of ways to experience it. From spotting the famed Big 5 on a game drive or walking safari in South Africa’s iconic Greater Kruger region to cruising down the Chobe River in Botswana to spot congregations of game along the riverbeds. Perhaps take to the sky in a helicopter and soar above both Zambia and Zimbabwe for a spectacular bird’s eye view over the thundering Victoria Falls.

Highlight?

Experiencing the Okavango Delta was an incredible highlight! We started with an exhilarating flight over the delta where we observed the wildlife and patchwork of waterways from above, giving us a great perspective of the area we were about to enter for the night. We travelled through the tranquil waterways on a traditional mokoro boat, keeping our eyes peeled for hippos and crocs along the way. We set up camp and spent the afternoon observing the incredible wildlife around us before spending the night by the campfire surrounded by the sounds of the bush.

Top Tip?

Think about how you can make your budget work best for you. We opted for a guided group tour and wild camping through Botswana to keep the cost down on accommodation without having to compromise on the experience. We decided to combine this with a more luxurious stay in other destinations such as South Africa where you can find exceptional value for money!
