Phuket has a huge range of beaches. Some are lively and busy (like Patong), while others are quieter and more scenic if you’re willing to explore a bit.
Koh Samui, on the other hand, feels more consistently relaxed. There are still lively areas, like Chaweng, but beaches like Lamai or Bo Phut offer soft sands and calms waters, with a sightly more chilled atmosphere overall.
Verdict: Phuket wins for choice, Koh Samui wins for a more easygoing experience.
Phuket is bigger, busier and more developed. There’s a real buzz to the island, especially in tourist-heavy areas.
Koh Samui still has plenty going on, but overall, it feels slower and less intense.
Verdict: If you like energy and options, Phuket. If you want to properly switch off, then Koh Samui.
Phuket has some of the most famous nightlife in Thailand. Think beach clubs, nightclubs, and lively streets filled with bars and restaurants.
Koh Samui definitely isn’t quiet, but the nightlife is a little more low-key. Think beach bars, cocktails, and a more relaxed social scene.
Verdict: Phuket for big nights, Koh Samui for something more chilled.
If you like having lots of activities to choose from, then Phuket might be the better option for you.
You’ve got island-hopping tours, cultural spots like Big Buddha, markets, waterparks, and plenty of excursions nearby, including trips to the beautiful Phi Phi islands.
Koh Samui still offers plenty to do (temples, waterfalls, boat trips), but the range is a little more limited.
Verdict: Phuket is better if you want a packed itinerary.
Both Phuket and Koh Samui have airports which makes things easier.
Phuket is generally cheaper to get to and more accessible, with more international flights and connections.
Koh Samui’s airport is smaller and can be a little more expensive to fly into, although it’s very convenient when you arrive.
Verdict: Phuket is usually a little bit easier to reach.
Phuket and Koh Samui have different weather patterns.
Phuket is best from November to April, as it’s the dry season with lots of sun.
Koh Samui is best from January to September, and the rainy season hits the island later in the year.
So depending on what month you’re planning on going away, one island might be better than the other.
Verdict: Check the weather before you book!
