Highway 1 passes through some of the finest coastal scenery on earth including nine state parks. You’ll find magical places like the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, home to towering Redwoods, idyllic walking trails and waterfalls. Whales, sea lions and sea otters can often be seen from the clifftops and to top it off there’s also the indulgent opulence of Hearst Castle, a fairytale mansion to die for.

Linking the laidback Keys with mainland Florida, the Overseas Highway wows you with its natural beauty. Crossing 42 bridges, the highway gazes out over tidal flats, golden beaches, mangroves and forests on its journey to Key West. The road is perhaps at its most impressive though, as it stretches out over the open water, with nothing but turquoise seas either side, distant islands dotting the horizon and herons, pelicans and eagles soaring overhead.

Shenandoah National Park is located an hour or so southwest of Washington DC and comprises 135 miles of mountain ridge running diagonally across Virginia. The centrepiece of the park is the Skyline Drive Scenic Highway, snaking its way across the crest of the mountains. The road has been expertly engineered to stick close to the top of the ridgeline to optimise panoramic views across the lowlands either side. Ingeniously, the road is also shielded by trees which enhance rather than spoil the view.

The Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone connects the many breathtaking attractions that the national park has to offer. The road curves in a figure-of-eight taking in famous geysers, tumbling waterfalls, idyllic swimming spots and some of the area’s best walking trails. Don’t miss out on this epic drive that will take you to some of the most colourful and surreal landscapes in the USA.

The Hana Highway winds for 65 miles from Kahului to the town of Hãna on the unspoilt east coast of Maui. Passing by waterfalls and black sand beaches at almost every turn with not a big resort in sight this feels like stepping back in time; perhaps that’s why they used this location for the opening scenes of the film Jurassic Park. The route passes over 59 bridges, many of which are only one lane wide, and 620 corners as it cuts under the eaves of luxuriant rainforests.

A drive for the ‘leaf-peepers’; in autumn the scenery is set ablaze with vibrantly coloured leaves. The Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire will take you up to 2,855 feet and curves along the spectacular Swift River. The best time to try to spot the autumnal colours is early October and the drive takes in beautiful woodland trails, babbling brooks and scenic lookouts.
