Sun Peaks in the heart of mountainous British Columbia offers relaxation, adventure, and outdoor pursuits. Read on for our guide to this spectacular area of Canada.

Where is spectacular Sun Peaks?

Sun Peaks is one of British Columbia's most standout playgrounds, where three majestic summits - Mt Morrisey, Tod Mountain and Sundance - provide year-round outdoor pursuits and fantastic culinary and cultural experiences. It’s located near the city of Kamloops, which makes it an easy and popular stop for summer visitors travelling between Vancouver and the Rockies.

Outdoor experiences

With peaks of up to 2,080m, Sun Peaks rewards you with sensational panoramas when you’re hiking, mountain biking or e-biking across its rolling landscapes.

There are 22 dedicated hiking trails and over 50 biking trails here suiting a wide range of abilities, and the two-hour guided alpine hike, which starts with a scenic ride on the Sunburst chairlift, is an excellent low-impact starter. The 3.7-mile Valley Trail Network, meanwhile, is perfect for a spot of relaxed adventure, while more challenge-hungry cyclists can explore more than 60 miles of downhill and cross-country mountain trails.

If you’re an avid golfer, you’ll love teeing off on Sun Peaks’ award-winning 18-hole golf course – the highest course in the province – where cool mountain air meets a cinematic mountain backdrop.

And if you’re keen to explore Sun Peaks’ crystal-clear waters, you can kayak or paddle on McGillivray Lake, known for its wildlife. Look out for moose, beavers, deer and bears – and sublime Tod Mountain views.

Summer sensations

Sun Peaks is a veritable hotspot come the summer season, and while it is famed as Canada’s second largest ski destination, it’s a hidden gem of British Columbia’s summertime. Its magnificent wide-open spaces are a cavalcade of colours, and as well as the panoramic, sun-blessed delights of hiking, biking, riding, kayaking and generally getting into the very heart of nature, there’s fly-fishing, jeep tours and a busy calendar of festivals, too. You can mingle with the locals at July’s Rockin’ In the Peaks big weekender, while the Endless Summer line-up in August features live acts and DJs.

Culinary and cultural immersion

Any visit to Sun Peaks should factor in its sumptuous food and drink. Whether you’re lunching on the tastiest flame-grilled steaks or warming up with a plate of poutine, you’ll revel in the warm Sun Peaks service. Those seeking that special après-ski feel will find it in abundance, with bars offering a warm and convivial atmosphere and cosy fondue venues welcoming in visitors all year.

Sun Peaks prides itself on its cultural calendar too. In June, enjoy Solstice Wellness Week and soak up the sunshine, reconnect with nature and celebrate the start of summer with a full weekend event of wellbeing activities, movement, mindfulness, and outdoor adventure. In September, embrace Alpenglow, an annual art festival featuring visual artists, musical acts, sculptures and more.
