From Zimbabwe
On the southern banks of the Zambezi River, the atmospheric town of Victoria Falls boasts spectacular views of 75% of the falls from inside the national park, with a network of 16 incredible viewpoints. There are also plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants within the town itself, so you can enjoy your downtime after witnessing this wonder. Even when the falls are at their driest there is usually some flow visible from the Zimbabwean side, while the pristine wilderness of Zambezi National Park is also close by.
From Zambia
The Zambian side of the falls offers a selection of wonderful places to stay, many of which are riverside, as well as easy access to the abundant and diverse wildlife of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Although there are fewer viewpoints, be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the length of the falls, Victoria Falls Bridge and impressive Batoka Gorge. It’s worth bearing in mind that in the lowest water months, the water in the Zambian section can dry up completely, leaving a rugged rock face.
Victoria Falls is at its best from April to September, with the highest water levels. Be aware that from April to May the falls are at their fullest, but the clouds of spray can make the visit rather wet!
1. Witness the falls from a viewpoint
An obvious one, I know, but it has to be said; nothing beats simply witnessing the thundering falls of this incredible natural beauty. Choose to take in the views at your own pace or perhaps enjoy the company of a guide, retelling the history of the area and showing you the best viewpoints.
2. Zambezi sunset or sunrise river cruise
Soak up the serene ambience on the river as you keep a look out for hippos, crocodiles and birdlife. Enjoy food and drinks on board, either as you breathe in the fresh morning air for an unforgettable start to your day, or as the sun is setting, admiring the glorious orange hues dance across the sky.
3. Helicopter flight over the falls
Victoria Falls is so spectacular that it demands your attention from every angle. Up in the air, high above these mighty falls it’s a completely different experience, and this will be a memory you won’t soon forget!
4. Chobe full day safari experience
A day in Chobe National Park is an exhilarating journey into the heart of Botswana’s wildlife wonderland. Start at Chobe River, taking in the beautiful surroundings and keeping your eyes peeled for elephants and hippos! Later, enjoy lunch at Chobe Safari Lodge on the riverbank before an afternoon game drive.
5. High tea at the Victoria Falls hotel
This elegant hotel was built in 1904 and a lovely high tea is one of Victoria Falls’ most iconic experiences. Sit back, relax, and admire the beautiful grounds of the property whilst nibbling on a selection of cakes and sandwiches, accompanied by a choice of fragrant teas and a glass of sparkling wine.
6. Boma dinner and drum experience
Experience an evening like no other! After the sun has set, don a traditional sarong and devour a feast of delicious food. Enjoy Zimbabwean dancing before a mesmerising and interactive drumming show with an electric atmosphere.
Ideally situated along the banks of the iconic Zambezi River, amongst towering indigenous trees is the wonderful Palm River Hotel. Located a 10 minute drive from the falls themselves, it is the perfect base from which to explore this majestic natural wonder.
