Day 1 Alder Bay to Farewell Harbour Lodge
Arrive in Alder Bay late morning, either independently by car or by transfer from Port Hardy airport following a flight from Vancouver (additional cost). Depart by boat for a transfer to the lodge, where you’ll be met for a briefing. Welcoming rooms feature cedar furnishings, local artwork and are located either in the floating section of the lodge or sit on stilts perched on rocks above the water. Later, take to the water with an experienced guide for a marine wildlife tour or maybe paddle through the protected waters of the harbour by kayak.
Day 2 Farewell Harbour Lodge
Wake up to ocean views, a delicious breakfast and get ready for a day of exceptional wildlife viewing. Activities at the lodge will be tailored according to the conditions, size of the group and your preferences, but today will normally take you on an exciting full day bear viewing trip. Travel deep into the surrounding estuaries by boat in search of grizzly and black bears, before disembarking onto smaller Zodiac boats or proceeding on foot, depending on the tide. Passionate guides look after your safety throughout, while ensuring optimal chances of seeing bears in this stunning natural environment. Return to the lodge for dinner, before enjoying informative presentations on the native eco-system, wildlife or local First Nations culture.
Day 3 Farewell Harbour Lodge
Today, choose between another day of bear viewing or a full day marine tour into Johnstone Strait, renowned for its resident Orca population (from mid to late July and until late September). Prior to July, go in search of the majestic Humpback, Dall’s Porpoises or Pacific White Sided Dolphins. Outstanding whale watching is interspersed with learning about the cultural traditions of the local Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations. Passing ancient village sites and mysterious pictograph rock art, explore their local customs and history. Back at the lodge, enjoy a drink by the fire or on the expansive deck, as the sun sets.
Day 4 Farewell Harbour Lodge to Alder Bay
An early start this morning allows for one final activity. Choose from sea kayaking, a marine excursion or a guided rainforest hike before your transfer back to Alder Bay.
