Outside of the capital, there is much to explore in this compact country. If you have a week or more to travel, the glorious and remote mountains of Svaneti are highly recommended. Closer to Tblisi, Mtskheta is an important base for the Georgian Orthodox Church while Gori was the childhood home of Stalin; today stands a museum dedicated to his life. Just outside of Gori also stands Uplistsikhe, an ancient rock hewn town abandoned around the 14th Century.

Georgia combines natural wonders with a long and proud history and is an easy introduction to the ever-fascinating Caucasus region.
