Tanzania Holidays

Boasting renowned national parks and glorious beaches, a holiday to Tanzania offers an unbeatable combination of exceptional wildlife viewing and the ultimate in relaxation. There’s also the chance to scale Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

Tanzania’s north is home to world-famous reserves and a diverse range of beautiful landscapes. Spot flamingos and lions by picturesque Lake Manyara, see the Big 5 within one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas at the Ngorongoro Crater and discover an astonishing variety of wildlife plus the great migration in the magnificent Serengeti.

For an off the beaten track experience head to Tanzania’s south, where the reserves of Selous and Ruaha offer vast wilderness and far fewer visitors. Or fly to the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania's west where the remote and little visited Mahale Mountains National Park is arguably the best place in the world to track chimpanzees.

Just a short hop from the mainland, the exotic islands of Zanzibar and Pemba are the ideal destination for a relaxing beach break, with powder soft sands and aquamarine waters.

  • WHERE TO GO IN TANZANIA

    Tanzania map
    Serengeti National Park
This beautiful vast expanse of grassy plains is an iconic safari destination and home to the largest wildebeest and zebra migration in the world. Whatever time of year you visit, you’ll have plenty of chances to spot the Big 5 (elephant, lion, rhino, leopard and buffalo) as well as the opportunity to take a hot air balloon flight over this amazing national park.
    Ngorongoro Crater & Karatu
One of the world's largest volcanic calderas, the Ngorongoro Crater offers amazing game viewing including the Big 5. along with breathtaking views from the top of the crater. The farmlands of the Karatu district, an hour or so's drive southeast, provide a great base from which to visit the crater as well as wonderful rural views and a range of activities.
    Zanzibar & Beyond
Encircled by beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters, the exotic islands of Zanzibar and Pemba are situated just off the coast of mainland Tanzania and offer the ideal destination for a relaxing beach break. Choose from a wide range of properties ranging from bustling all inclusive resorts to remote rustic escapes.
    Tarangire National Park
With grassy savannahs, huge swamps, the meandering Tarangire River and thousands of spectacular baobab trees, this park has incredibly varied landscapes. Renowned for its prolific birdlife, game viewing here can be exceptional too with large herds of elephants and plenty of predators. The vast size of the park offers an opportunity to really get away from the crowds.
    Lake Manyara National Park
This small park enjoys a spectacular setting beside the Rift Valley escarpment. Famous for its unusual tree-climbing lions, as well as elephants, buffalo and flamingos, Lake Manyara offers a diverse wildlife experience within a relatively small area. The beautiful landscape and array of animals and birdlife make this one of Tanzania’s most popular parks.
    Selous Game Reserve
Vast, remote and wild, Selous Game Reserve covers an area almost four times the size of the Serengeti, offering pristine wilderness and an amazingly rich variety of wildlife. Spot hippos and crocodiles on a river safari, enjoy a walking safari through the extensive grasslands and look out for endangered wild dogs, buffalos and lions on game drives.
    Ruaha National Park
Tanzania’s largest national park, Ruaha receives far fewer visitors than those in the north, ideal for those wanting to get off the beaten track. The park is home to a host of game including a large population of elephant, a wide variety of antelope species and many predators, including several prides of lion, plus leopard and cheetah.
    Mahale Mountains National Park
Situated beside the blue waters of Lake Tanganyika, the soaring forested mountains of this national park are arguably the best place in Africa to track wild chimpanzees. As well as chimpanzees, the park’s lush rainforest, grasslands and woodlands are also home to a multitude of other primates and a vast array of birds.
    Mount Kilimanjaro
Towering above the surrounding plains, Africa’s highest mountain stands at 5,895m and a climb to its summit is one of the world’s greatest challenges. There are numerous routes to choose from, each offering a different trekking experience, level of difficulty and length of time spent on the mountain.
    Arusha
Surrounded by lush green countryside and coffee plantations, the sprawling city of Arusha is the gateway to the Serengeti and northern Tanzania’s other national parks. Located at an altitude of 1,300m and set near the foot of towering Mount Meru, Africa’s fifth highest mountain, the city enjoys a temperate year round climate and an impressive mountain backdrop.

"Pole pole'" means 'slowly' in Swahili - this is the best way to tackle Mount Kilimanjaro and increase your odds of reaching the summit.

Visit Jozani Forest Reserve for a chance to see the Red Colubus Monkey close up. This is one of the few places they can be seen in the wild. Guides are also very knowledgable about the plant and tree species many of which are still used for their medicinal properties.

Make a detour to Olduvai Gorge, home to the earliest evidence of mankind in the world. The interesting museum here houses imprints of the famous Laetoli footprints left behind by our 3.6 million year old ancestors. In a funny kind of way, you can't help feeling like you've come home...
