Osa Peninsula & Golfo Dulce Holidays

south & central america
Hidden away in the southwest of the country and described as one of the most biologically diverse places on earth, the captivating Osa Peninsula and remarkable Piedras Blancas National Park are absolute must-see destinations for nature enthusiasts.

Adjacent to the Osa Peninsula, the magical Golfo Dulce, meaning ‘Sweet Gulf’, is a large bay fringed by beautifully rugged beaches and backed by dense rainforest. The waters of the Golfo Dulce are home to over 20% of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast marine life including hawksbill turtles, dolphins and migrating humpback whales.

Generally accessed via a short flight from San José, followed by a scenic but bumpy drive (or a boat trip), the journey is part of the adventure when travelling to the Osa Peninsula! The properties here are set in the jungle with wildlife all around and offer an immersive nature experience. Most lodges are located in private reserves with trails you can explore unguided, as well as offering excellent and diverse excursions with naturalist guides.

Trailfinders offers a wide range of Osa Peninsula and Golfo Dulce holidays and our expert travel consultants are a mine of information about what to do here, often with first-hand travel experience. Whether you want to explore Osa Peninsula with your own private driver, join a sociable small group tour, or are simply looking for advice on the best national parks or luxury lodges – they are the perfect people to ask.

WHERE TO GO IN THE OSA PENINSULA & GOLFO DULCE

The Osa Peninsula is home to more than half of all wildlife species in the country, and boasts Corcovado National Park, considered by many the crown jewel in all of Costa Rica’s national parks. There are also numerous other parks and reverses in this area which offer equally impressive wildlife experiences.

The Golfo Dulce separates the Osa Peninsula from the mainland Costa Rica and boasts incredible biodiversity and some excellent eco-lodges. It is home to Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas, a stunning tract of rainforest that used to be part of the Corcovado National Park. It is now designated a separate park but still it connects with Corcovado to form a vital and ecologically diverse biological corridor. Dolphins can often be spotted in the waters around here.
Drake Bay
Drake Bay
Situated on the north coast of the peninsula, Drake Bay, known locally as Bahía Drake, can be easily reached by water taxi from the town of Sierpe, which is accessible by road from Manuel Antonio and Uvita. Picture incredible natural beauty with lush rainforest, pristine beaches and stunning sunsets. The biodiverse Corcovado National Park is close by, alongside Caño Island and its biological reserve.
Puerto Jiménez
Puerto Jiménez
Home to verdant rainforest surrounded by a dramatic and rugged coastline, the southern tip of the peninsula is best reached by a light aircraft flight to Puerto Jiménez. Upscale lodges are situated in private reserves offering jungle trails, bird-watching opportunities and exciting wildlife encounters right on the doorstep.
Golfo Dulce
Golfo Dulce
Accessed from Golfito airport, this region is home to the richly biodiverse Piedras Blancas National Park, a stunning tract of forest that connects with Corcovado National Park to form a vital ecological corridor. The waters of the Golfo Dulce are teeming with life, visitors can enjoy wildlife-cruises to spot dolphins and migratory humpback whales.
