Tortuguero & the Caribbean Coast

Tortuguero & the Caribbean Coast Holidays

The Tortuguero National Park covers 311 square kilometres of lush coastal landscape and extends 5200 square kilometres out into the Caribbean Sea. The national park takes its name from the four species of marine turtles (tortuga in Spanish) which clamber up the beach to nest each year between July and September. Though this is undoubtedly a highlight, Tortuguero is about more than just turtles and most visitors also come to explore the jungle-lined waterways which are teeming with wildlife; watch caimans sunning themselves on the river banks or cruising through the mangrooves, toucans hopping along branches and kingfishers swooping down to catch their dinner.

With its isolated position on the steamy Caribbean coast, the Tortuguero National Park can only be accessed by plane or motorised canoe from simply wooden jetty's and the journey is part of the adventure! The lodges here are rustic but visitors are rewarded by a unique experience and the abundance of wildlife.

To the south lies an alluring coastline and a diverse blend of cultures unlike anywhere else in Costa Rica, with influences from Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri indigenous communities . The coast is dotted with beautiful palm lined beaches, ranging from volcanic black to pristine white sands, with waves to tempt all surfers from experts to complete beginners. You will also find the Cahuita National Park where visitors can enjoy a variety wildlife, beautiful corals and well maintained walking trails. From Puerto Viejo you can also travel by boat to access the islands of Bocas del Toro in Panama.

    Tortuguero National Park
    Tortuguero National Park
This park is home to a huge number of species including sloths, howler monkeys, colourful frogs, iguanas and abundant birdlife. It also attracts four of the eight main species of sea turtle, making Tortuguero's beaches a crucial habitat for these large marine reptiles.

In season you may have the opportunity to see turtles nesting. It's a memorable experience taking a night walk to watch these creatures make their way under starlight onto Tortuguero's peaceful beaches, and your guide will explain more about their amazing journey. Visitors can also explore the winding waterways by boat or on walk through the jungle with expert local guides.
    Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
    Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Once only frequented by intrepid surfers, this colourful town is now a bustling hub with many shops and global eateries. Despite the growth it still retains a distinctly Caribbean feel with its unique, laid back charm and golden beaches backed by tropical forest.

Dirt roads lead to secluded beaches, each with a personality of their own. Two of the most popular are Playa Cocles; famous for its challenging surf and great waves, and Playa Uva where white sands and swaying palms create the perfect environment to while the day away.
    Cahuita National Park
    Cahuita National Park
The Cahuita National Park encompasses a huge area of land and ocean and offers great snorkelling and hiking. You can snorkel amongst a variety of tropical fish, sharks, turtles and beautiful coral or hike along the many trails surrounded by a diverse array of flora and fauna.

Cahuita doesn't experience as many visitors as some of Costa Rica's better known national parks, which means you can often enjoy the jungle and beaches without the crowds.
    Bocas del Toro
    Bocas del Toro
Just across the border in Panama, the province of Bocas del Toro comprises of a chain of islands off the Caribbean coast plus a section of nearby mainland. Within the archipelago you will find Bocas del Toro (often referred to as Bocas town), several densely forested islands, uninhabited islets and the Parque Nacional Marino Isla Bastimentos.

Bocas Town itself is small with colourful, Caribbean-style houses, local restaurants and a few stores. It doesn't really have a beach so we recommend staying in a resort on one of the surrounding islands or perched on isolated sections of the coastline. These resorts can only be accessed by boat and are away from the crowds which means tranquility, azure water and dreamy sunsets. Pure bliss!
