Belize Holidays

Beautiful Belize is something of an anachronism with a British heritage and a distinctly Caribbean feel that sets it apart from its Latin American neighbours. For such a small country you can enjoy an incredible diversity of experiences; there are little visited Mayan ruins, dense jungle perfect for adventuring, national parks teeming with birdlife and a Caribbean coastline dotted with idyllic islands and coral reefs.

Belize’s barrier reef is second in length only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and the marine life to be found here is easily a match. Dotted along the reef are around 450 tropical islands or cayes. Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye exude a mellow Caribbean ambience and boast serene stretches of white sand whilst some of the smaller cayes offer a more 'Robinson Crusoe' experience. Ambergris is the largest island and boasts some luxurious resorts while the only town on the island, San Pedro, offers a fascinating window on local life. Nearby reefs provide excellent snorkelling and scuba diving whilst more experienced divers flock to visit the renowned Blue Hole.

For those seeking adventure San Ignacio, an easy going little town up in the highlands of Belize, is the gateway for the Cayo District. From here you can discover Mayan ruins, hidden caves, explore the jungle on hiking trails or drift down the Mopan River on a kayak or river tube.

It’s estimated that hundreds of Mayan sites are still waiting to be discovered in the jungles of Belize. The best preserved, Caracol and Xunantunich, are both easy day trips from San Ignacio and, despite being Belize’s most visited sites, are tranquil spots that feel a world away from the throngs visiting Mexico’s Mayan sites. San Ignacio is also a convenient jumping off point for Guatemala and the stupendous site of Tikal is within easy striking distance.

Visit the Actun Tunichil Muknal caves on the border with Guatamala. Here you will swim in to the caves, climb up boulders and walk in the pitch dark on some of the most alien looking cave formations. Witness the final resting place of Mayan skeletons, now calcified, illuminated by your head torch, the closest you will ever feel to being Indiana Jones or Lara Croft!!
