Guatemala Holidays

Guatemala is steeped in Mayan traditions and home to some of the most spectacular ruins in Central America. Though small, this little country has more than its fair share of outstanding beauty, from stunning lakes and picture-perfect volcanoes to charming colonial cities scattered with fabulous boutique hotels.

The former capital Antigua is one of the most captivating destinations in the whole of the Americas and is filled with cobbled streets, bustling plazas and candy coloured facades. The Spanish history of this beguiling city is displayed prominently in the well preserved colonial buildings whilst its Mayan heritage is woven into the city's core with colour, culture and tradition visible on every corner. A short drive away, Lake Atitlan enjoys a spectacular location in the shadow of three dramatic smouldering volcanoes. With traditional communities living on the shores this is a wonderful place to experience some of the rich cultural heritage of Guatemala, it also offers an opportunity to see how local textiles are made and learn about the Mayan Gods.

To the north the imposing remains of mighty Tikal, the seductive lost city of the Mayans, represent just the tip of the iceberg of these ruins, with much of the site still being reclaimed from the surrounding jungle. Your imagination will be fired as the pyramids and massive stone temples reveal themselves and you hear about the extraordinary civilisation that built it. A dawn tour of these enigmatic ruins, when the early morning mist combines with the eerie roar of the howler monkeys, is simply unmissable.
