Holidays to Cambodia reward visitors with truly memorable experiences from awe-inspiring temples and colonial heritage to lush forested mountains and exquisite beaches.
Undoubtedly the main draw for most to Cambodia, if not all of South East Asia, is Angkor Wat. Built between the 9th and 13th Centuries the hundreds of temples that make up the Angkor complex formed the centre of the mighty Khmer Empire. Larger than modern-day London in size, it was lost to the jungle for centuries until it was rediscovered in the 19th Century. The enduring myths and impressive architecture of this ancient lost city still bewitch and enchant travellers to this day.
There's plenty more to this compact little gem of a country than Angkor alone though. The capital Phnom Penh offers colonial architecture, colourful markets and bustling cafés whilst, for the more adventurous, the jungle clad Cardamom Mountains are home to rare wildlife and tranquil waterways. To the east you will find the cascading waterfalls, tribal communities and elephants of Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, two of Cambodia's most remote provinces.
For those who prefer to travel at a more leisurely pace, cruising the Mekong between Cambodia and Vietnam is a popular and memorable way to discover the region’s charms and will visit areas that are otherwise impossible to reach. Most cruises travel between Siem Reap and My Tho in the Mekong Delta following a broadly similar itinerary, exploring life on these fascinating waterways.
Lastly don't forget the fabulous beaches! Once a sleepy coastal town, Sihanoukville has undergone extensive development and is now a large, industrial city. Whilst we don't recommend staying here, this is the ideal departure point to head over to the beautiful Koh Rong Archipelago, a string of islands dotted among the emerald waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Here you will find crystal waters, stunning beaches and lush jungle interiors ideal for relaxing and exploring, it's the perfect conclusion to any Cambodia holiday.
