Leave Negombo for the 4 hour drive northeast to the Cultural Triangle, your base for the next 3 nights.
Day 3 Polonnaruwa
Visit the former capital city of Polonnaruwa, built during the 11th and 12th Centuries and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the ruins of its ancient Royal Palace and temples, before returning to your hotel to spend the afternoon at leisure.
Day 4 Sigiriya & Minneriya NP
Start the day at Sigiriya or ‘Lion Rock’, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hike to the top is fairly strenuous but worthwhile to see the rock frescoes, the ruins of the 5th Century palace and the spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Later, drive to Minneriya National Park for a game drive.
Day 5 Cultural Triangle to Kandy
Head first to the Dambulla cave temples, a complex of five caves filled with Buddha images and statues. Continue to the hill country capital of Kandy and in the evening enjoy a show of Sri Lankan music and dance before a visit to the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
Day 6 Kandy
Spend the morning exploring Kandy, including a visit to the bustling market, the British Garrison Cemetery and the Ceylon Tea Museum (closed Mondays). Later, enjoy a leisurely stroll around the beautiful Peradeniya Botanic Gardens.
Day 7 Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
Climb the scenic, winding roads up to Nuwara Eliya in the heart of the tea producing region, stopping to visit a tea plantation and factory en route. Take a walk around the town centre, passing buildings that date from its time as a British hill station, before continuing to your hotel.
Day 8 Nuwara Eliya to Colombo
Drive to the capital city of Colombo for your final night in Sri Lanka.
Day 9 Colombo to the Maldives
A 90 minute flight brings you to the idyllic Maldives, comprising 1,190 islands spread across 20 major atolls (island chains surrounding a lagoon). Stay on one of the outer atolls and enjoy a scenic seaplane flight to your island destination, or stay within Malé Atoll for a convenient speedboat transfer.
Days 10-15 Maldives
Spend your days relaxing around the pool, lazing on the stunning white sandy beach or snorkelling the crystal clear waters. For the more active, many resorts also offer a host of watersports and sporting facilities.
Day 16 Maldives
Transfer back to the airport for your flight home.
*Depending on the movement of elephants, you may visit the nearby Kaudulla National Park or Eco Park instead to give you a better chance of seeing these majestic animals.
