The system failure impacting UK Air Traffic Control on BH Monday 28th August 2023, was the most recent of similar disruptions occurring over busy travel periods.
- Border Force E-Gate ‘system issues’ at Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, and Newcastle over the May Spring Bank Holiday weekend (also the start of half term)
- British Airways ‘IT glitch’ resulting in 175 flight cancellations over the same May Spring Bank Holiday weekend
Coincidence or something more sinister at play?
On 17th June 2022, Heathrow experienced a ‘technical issue’ with their baggage system in T2 which meant that a ‘luggage mountain’ famously built up in the terminal. This incident occurred following weeks of travel chaos in the build up to summer 2022 when airports were struggling with demand due to a shortage of workers post pandemic.
