Africa’s highest mountain stands at 5,895m and a climbing Kilimanjaro to its summit is one of the world’s great challenges.
There are numerous routes to choose from, each offering a different trekking experience, level of difficulty and length of time spent on the mountain.
Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route
Often considered the most scenic route up the mountain, the Lemosho route is one of the more remote trails. Approaching Kilimanjaro from the west, the Lemosho route includes eight days on the mountain and the extra time for acclimatisation ensures a good summit success rate.
Altitude Maximum 5,895m, average 4,000m.
Duration 8 days point to point trekking, including full porterage.
Accommodation 7 nights full service camping in three-person tents, private toilet tents provided, 2 nights simple en suite hotel accommodation.
Kilimanjaro Rongai Route
The only route to approach the mountain from the north, Rongai is regarded as the quietest trail. Summit day is undeniably tough but the six days on the mountain allows for good acclimatisation and the success rate is high.
Altitude Maximum 5,895m, average 4,000m.
Duration 6 days point to point trekking, including full porterage.
Accommodation 5 nights full service camping in three-person tents, private toilet tents provided, 2 nights simple en suite hotel accommodation.
Accommodation on the trek is determined by the route chosen and will be in mountain huts with shared dormitories or basic campsites with pit latrines. Mountain guides and porters will carry all the necessary water, camping equipment and most personal items and will be on hand to assist you all the way to the top. Private guides and porters are available for a supplement, however the campsite/mountain hut used each evening will not be private and will have other people and groups staying.
A trek to the summit of this spectacular mountain is not something to be taken lightly and there many factors to consider when choosing your route. For many climbers the adjustment to exertion at such high altitudes is the greatest challenge and so the longer climbs that take more days to reach the summit are sometimes preferred.
