Hunters Country House, Plettenberg Bay Expert Review
Nicola Morgan
Hunters Country House is a gorgeous property located within the same grounds as Tsala Treetop Lodge and Lairds Lodge. The property has stunningly maintained gardens with all kinds of plants, flowers, and even the occasional monkey and deer!
An elegant country retreat is the perfect description for this property - the rooms are individual thatched cottages dotted around the grounds. They are beautifully furnished and complete with fireplaces which are lit at night on request. Returning in the evening to find an extra blanket, bedside chocolate and a hot water bottle was a lovely touch.
The food in the main restaurant was excellent with lots of local fare on offer and dietary requirements were well catered for. If you fancy something different to eat, Zinzi Restaurant is a 400m walk through the grounds, but we ate in the main restaurant for both lunch and dinner both nights as it was so good.
There’s a large pool (not heated!) and even a yoga room. Staff were friendly and welcoming and on hand for any enquiries. The lounge area with honesty bar, big armchairs and huge fireplace was a fabulous way to enjoy a pre-dinner drink.
I can’t rate Hunters highly enough and you could easily spend two or three nights here, just a short drive from the hustle and bustle of Plettenberg Bay.
Top tip: Reservations for Zinzi Restaurant are essential as its popular with the locals, particularly over the Christmas and NY period.

Trailfinders Hotel Classification Guide
Modest accommodation with basic facilities, representing good value where price is the main priority.
Simple, comfortable accommodation and facilities offering good value for the destination.
Good standard of accommodation and/or facilities and overall a higher level of service may be expected.
High international standards of accommodation and facilities where luxury and quality of service are priorities.
Indicates that the property offers a higher than average level of accommodation and facilities when compared to other properties of the same classification.
Unique, often smaller and sometimes historic properties, which offer individual charm and are consequently very popular. They offer the standards of accommodation indicated by their classification but rooms may be smaller than average and not all facilities may be available.
Trailfinders classifications are for your guidance only and do not mirror any international "star rating" system. In each case, the full description of the property should be read and used in conjunction with the classification indicated. A 3★ city hotel, for example, may be more expensive than a 4★ if it is in a prime location. Classifications are unique to a destination and can reflect local or regional variations in quality and service, so a 5★ in a particular area may not be comparable with a 5★ elsewhere.
