Thornybush Game Lodge, Thornybush Nature Reserve

Wow - what an amazing experience! The rooms at Thornybush Game Lodge were stunning, finished to the highest specification. All rooms have large decks out the front with chairs and tables so guests can enjoy some private outdoor space. Bathrooms have continuing views of the river with freestanding bathtubs, and an inside and outside shower.

Wildlife can roam freely through the hotel grounds, and you will often see them, so there are night porters who will walk you between the restaurant and your room in the evenings. Most meals are a mixture of buffet and a la carte and are a very good standard.

Staff couldn't do enough for you from arrival. Really top-level service.

Game viewing was outstanding. We saw the whole of the Big 5 during the four game drives we had, as well as lots of birdlife, hyenas, hippos and even lion cubs! We never saw more than one or two trucks at each viewing spot on our game drive so it felt very well-coordinated. Rangers would coordinate with each other but would drive on when another vehicle appeared. Trackers were outstanding, and it was amazing to see how they worked.

Overall, this lodge provided a fabulous safari experience - couldn't fault it!

Top tip: Safari trucks are open so completely unobstructed views. No sides or roof. They do have industrial rain ponchos which do protect you from the rain if needed to no need to pack your own waterproofs.
