Thailand’s second largest city, Chiang Mai is an atmospheric and colourful destination, rich in history and set in the picturesque mist shrouded foothills of northern Thailand. It boasts a charming old town and hundreds of sacred temples, plus excellent restaurants, a superb night market and a laidback charm. It is also the perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside and Doi Inthanon National Park.
Surrounding the point at which Laos, Thailand and Burma meet, the mountainous Golden Triangle region was once notorious as the centre of the local opium trade. Today the fertile valleys and rugged hillsides of this northernmost part of Chiang Rai province are dotted with remote villages populated by the Hmong, Shan, Yao, Karen, Lahu and Lisu ethnic groups and bordered by the majestic Mekong River.
