The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui

Like stepping in to a James Bond film minus the peril, The Ritz-Carlton Samui lives up to the lofty ambitions of the chain who pride themselves on exquisite design and service to match. Here, the basics are done well, and the additions are the cherry on top. Breakfast is extensive, boasting a fantastic mix of western, local and international options and a patisserie section to put a Parisian to shame. The pool area is vast with a swanky bar that serves little nibble such as onion rings, chicken nuggets and fries (cheap) and large plates too (standard 5★ hotel prices). The rooms are luxuriously furnished and include charging points compatible with UK plugs, excellent free toiletries and ample space.

Added to all this is a terrific Spa Village which is almost the size of another resort entirely (complete with its own pool!) and complimentary use of tennis and basketball courts, plus free rein on a colourful mini golf course. Complimentary access to healthy amounts of chilled water and factor 50 suncream is provided at these sporting stations. Furthermore, the staff are fantastic and not at all stuffy, sporting Hawaiian shirts by the pool and traditional Thai dress in the lobby.

Top tip: The Appreciation Hour is a must. Each day, usually between 1730-1830 the hotel put on a totally complimentary drinks and canapes hour at one of their bars. Drinks are standard beer, red/white wine, soft drinks and a signature cocktail. The canapes were stunning and you really can eat and drink to your heart's content during this hour.
