Chitwan is Nepal’s oldest national park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. At the foot of the Himalayas, the park is one of the few remaining remnants of the great ‘Terai’ (former marshland) region which extended across the south of Nepal and Northern India. It has a particularly rich variety of wildlife including leopards, the majestic, but elusive, Bengal tiger and one of the last populations of the endangered one-horned Asiatic rhino.
