After, take a ferry across to Goree Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to learn about the Atlantic slave trade, and the role this little island played. The Island now makes for a tranquil getaway from the bustling streets of Dakar.
Day 3 Dakar to Lompoul Desert
Leave Dakar behind and head to Lompoul Desert, stopping at Lake Retba en route where you can see men and women collecting salt from the pink waters. Arrive at Lompoul Desert, go for a hike in the dunes and watch the sunset, later enjoy a traditional Senegalese dinner before settling in for the night.
Day 4 Lompoul Desert to Saint-Louis
The morning is free to explore the Lompoul Desert before continuing onto Saint-Louis, the former French capital of Senegal. On arrival take a tour of this historic city in a caleche (traditional horse drawn cart).
Day 5 Saint-Louis
Head to the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary situated on the southeast bank of the Senegal River and spend the day exploring the waterways of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to almost 400 species of migratory and resident birds and other wildlife.
Day 6 Saint-Louis to Kaolack
After breakfast drive to the holy city of Touba and visit the Great Mosque. Next stop is a local Wolof village en route to Kaolack. The Wolof people are the largest ethnic group in Senegal, and also form a majority of The Gambia's capital, Banjul. Learn about the history, lives and traditions of the Wolof people on a tour through the village. Arrive at Kaolack, a busy commercial centre for trade coming from and going to The Gambia and Mali.
Day 7 Kaolack to Banjul, The Gambia
Cross the border in to The Gambia and visit Jufureh and Kunta Kinteh Island (formerly James Island), two important stops in The Gambia's slave history. In the afternoon continue onto Banjul where you will stay the night.
Day 8 Banjul
Take a guided tour of the city today and visit the Arch 22, National Museum, and Albert Market. The rest of the day is free to spend at leisure. Perhaps spend some time relaxing on the beach.
Day 9 Banjul to Somone, Senegal
