Itinerary
Day 1 Cairns
Arrive in Cairns and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Later, meet your tour leader and have a welcome dinner with your fellow travellers.
Day 2 Cairns to Undara
Departing Cairns early, drive through the scenic Atherton Tablelands. Visit beautiful Millaa Millaa Falls before continuing to Undara Volcanic National Park, which protects the longest lava tube cave system in the world.
Day 3 Undara to Karumba
Head west to Croydon passing by Blackbull and travel through to Normanton before heading into Karumba.
Day 4 Karumba
Join The Gulflander, a historic little train which journeys from Normanton to Critters Camp. Later today, discover the amazing secrets of the mighty barramundi at The Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery, a brand new state-of-the-art Interpretive Centre. This afternoon, enjoy a special Sand Island sunset dinner cruise.
Day 5 Karumba to Hell’s Gate
Follow the Savannah Way across the Gulf. Stop at Camp 119, the most northerly camp of the Burke and Wills Expedition of 1860/61. From here, head to Leichhardt Falls and then via Doomadgee to Hell’s Gate, a dramatic pass through the rocky escarpment.
Day 6 Hell’s Gate
Take a tour of the station and then take a scenic helicopter flight over the coastline of the Gulf of Carpentaria via Eight Mile Creek where you may see native wildlife such as crocodiles from the air.
Day 7 Hell’s Gate to Pungalina
Cross the border into the Northern Territory and then continue onto the Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s Pungalina-Seven Emu Wildlife Sanctuary.
Day 8 Pungalina
Explore the two sanctuaries which cover a combined area of around 305,000 hectares and include an incredibly diverse array of flora and fauna.
Day 9 Pungalina to Lorella Springs
Today, visit the Borroloola Museum on the McArthur River and then pass through Limmen National Park before arriving at Lorella Springs Wilderness Park, a spectacular one-million-acre pasture.
Days 10-11 Lorella Springs
Explore all the wonders of Lorella Springs Wilderness Park including its pristine thermal springs. Board an exhilarating helicopter flight over the Southern Lost City and take a drive out to the area to explore the ancient sandstone structures.
Day 12 Lorella Springs to Katherine
Pass through dramatic scenery in one of the most remote sections of Savannah Way through Roper Bar, towards Katherine.
Day 13 Katherine
Enjoy Tom Curtain’s national award-winning Katherine Outback Experience before a 2 hour boat cruise on the Katherine River Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park.
Day 14 Katherine to Darwin
Pass through Pine Creek and Adelaide River before arriving in Darwin. Along the way, visit Edith Falls, where you can swim in the pool at the base of the waterfall. End this amazing trip with a sunset dinner cruise.
Day 15 Darwin
After breakfast enjoy a leisurely morning before being transferred.
