From the coastal shores of Seward and Whittier, past glaciers, forests and towering Denali all the way north to the Golden Heart City of Fairbanks; the three main routes of the Alaska Railroad showcase the true breadth of awe inspiring Alaskan landscapes. Operating from mid-May to mid-September during the long, light summer days, there can be no easier way to journey through the natural majesty of the USA’s largest state.
This relaxing 5½ hr journey from the gateway city of Anchorage passes the picturesque mountains of Girdwood and the incredible alpine meadows and glaciers of Grandview. Travel to Portage and keep an eye out for black and brown bears, moose, bison and more. Continue to Whittier, the access point for a glacier cruise in Prince William Sound, before traveling through the enormous Chugach National Forest. Follow the track to the edge of Spencer Lake for a spectacular view of massive Spencer Glacier before the train then winds along the Placer River Valley, often considered the most scenic stretch of track, with views of Bartlett Glacier and Trail Glacier.
